From the brilliant @jerusalem.bsky.social on why we can’t build green energy projects (excerpt from “On the Housing Crisis”). On point. Modern environmentalism was built to stop projects, not advocate for them - a large reason why housing, transit, green energy is so difficult.

While units per 1000 people is a decent metric, I wonder if it could be adjusted for pop increase. Vancouver outbuilding, say Winnipeg, is less impressive when you consider that Vancouver is growing quickly and Winnipeg is growing very slow.

A reminder that It’s A Wonderful Life is a YIMBY story. George Bailey helps people get small loans to build modest homes so they can escape the slumlord H. Potter. The bad guy isn’t a developer, he’s a landlord that hates developers.

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) was discovered by someone studying bacteria living in geysers. Their polymerase proteins can withstand the heat needed to split DNA without themselves being destroyed. So you can hear and cool DNA rapidly to replicate it. Let people study weird things!!

A constant frustration in Calgary (and other cities I’m sure) is the ubiquity and impunity by which drivers violate basic road rules. Running red lights, turning right where there are “no right on red” signs, not yielding to pedestrians. Oh and rampant speeding. It’s infuriating.

I found this during my masters research too (qualitative interviews with people on housing and transportation choices). People will consider changing transportation behaviour when 1. They move or 2. They change jobs. There are few times outside of that they change commute modes.

@bsky.app please please please update the feed so that I don’t have to scroll down to find out where I left off. I want to read posts in chronological order, not reverse. Do this, and I’ll find this site 1000x more user friendly.

One critique of Bluesky I have is that the timeline updates with the most recent posts displayed, and you have to scroll down to find where you left off, rather than being updated from where you left off & you scroll to get caught up. Haven’t figured a way to reconfigure this. Anyone have any tips?
