Sure, I go to the library for books, but also sometimes I go just to exist in a space that's welcoming, organized, comfortable, judgement-free, and run by knowledgeable, helpful, passionate people, because that energy is straight up medicinal

I hate that phrase,"glommed on." As if members of Congress are just pushing to expose these disgusting vile abusers because it's trendy or expedient instead of deep down right. People like this can't imagine someone might enter public service to, you know, serve the public.

Week 23 of ##SewAndTell is all about kids, and hence, in my wheelhouse. Early on, I stumbled on a formula of cotton pajamas + fleece accessories for comfortable, practical kid costumes. It's true that when a government becomes tyrannical it is the duty of the citizens to overthrow it and form a new one. It's just that the people who have been saying it in my lifetime have been saying it in response to stuff like the existence of Hannukah, and Black people, and the Spanish language.

He’s five. He’ll need snacks. Are they gonna have anything he recognizes or likes? He’s gonna need bathroom breaks. Who’s zipping him up tight when it’s cold? Who’s holding onto his winter clothes when it gets warm all way south? Who’s changing his socks? Who’s keeping him clean? Putting him to bed?

I also recognize that they're young enough to never have experienced a world where the campaign signs came down after an election, and where the U.S. flag didn't at least partly connote white nationalism. For them, "do we know who they voted for?" means "are we alone? Or are there more of us?" (2/2)

As my 11- and 9-yos become more politically aware, I think a lot about how to balance teaching them to stay open to multiple perspectives with cultivating a strong moral compass. I don't love how their first question when they meet someone new is "Do we know who they voted for?" And yet... (1/2)

The thing about flush toilets and answering machines is that they are great innovations for narrowly defined tasks. Nobody expects their toilet to befriend them, study for them, detect their cancer, and also make their grocery list. Answering machines weren't shoved down throats as a panacea.

Thanks! It's very old. We scavenged it off a neighbor's porch, and we've had it in 2 residences so far. It's held our scarves and mittens and dishes, but the books have pride of place elsewhere
