May has been another busy month for the Devon Freewheelers Volunteers, we did 673 jobs in total, including 55 Air Ambulance jobs for our Air Ambulance Partners (Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance & Devon Air Ambulance). That's an average of around 21 jobs per day. All FREE to the NHS!

Nice day for a long run when an urgent sample needed to be taken from Musgrove Park Hospital to Derriford. Our bike was on the road within half an hour, sample collected from the theatre and a seamless transfer for the last run to the lab. All FREE to the NHS #bloodbikes #nhs #charity #itswhatwedo

Spring has sprung and a sunny day was definitely a welcome sight for our duty East rider on Saturday. Multiple calls for urgent pickups at the same locations meant repeated trips and a lot of criss-crossing the patch, 150 miles in all. But #itswhatwedo since 2009, without charging the #nhs a penny

Spotlight on our Dorchester team, supporting the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance with replenishment of plasma stocks every 48 hours. Our dedicated team of 10 volunteers covered 252 life-saving deliveries in 2024, all without charging a penny for their services!

VOR! When our Saturday rider brought the bike back from a long 9 to 9 shift, he found a blown fork seal and we had to declare it Vehicle Off Road until it's fixed. Fortunately, with a fleet of 20 cars and bikes we had a replacement ready to go. That's why we can serve the NHS 247/365 #bloodbikes

With 100 or more samples to move during our normal evening and weekend shifts, we need a way to pick them up from closed GP surgeries. So we supply locking blood boxes and transfer everything into hard panniers on the bike in UN3373 spec padded bags. A professional service, at no charge to the #NHS

A record weekend with 178 samples collected and safely delivered for the #NHS free of charge!

Today saw a long run for East rider Dave, when Torbay Hospital NICU needed donor breast milk, ferried from the regional hub in Bristol. A round trip of 250 miles in chilly conditions, but as always, when the NHS calls, we're there!

Another weekend where we don't mention the "Q" word. Dry weather meant the bikes were out again, with east rider Des on constant calls between 1.00 and 20.00 on Saturday in 0-3°. Sunday all go with calls at Tiverton maternity hospital and home dialysis in Bridgewater.

It's been a busy month for our volunteers, serving the NHS and the healthcare community in Devon. We have never charged for our services and our volunteers receive no payment. We love to ride and we love to support the NHS. That's a win-win!

You've probably seen us on the roads round Devon and the Southwest of England. But what do we do? Watch this award-winning video for an insight.

You know you can rely on us! Sickness and prior commitments left our North team short-handed so East volunteer Mick stepped up to cover our pickups. For the rest of the weekend, with a severe storm forecast, the bikes will be stood down for safety and all jobs will be allocated to our area cars.

We're busy again! This time it was the turn of our Dorchester based team supplying blood to the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. Our driver Kim was called out at midnight, two nights in a row, to replenish supplies that had been used up in trauma incidents attended by the DSAA.

This is what it's all about. An urgent call-out from Tiverton maternity unit on Sunday, a tiny blood sample from a tiny human fresh into the world, rushed to the Exeter path labs for analysis, saving the NHS £50+ over a taxi. Our free transport service saves the NHS up to £250,000 a year!

A huge thank-you to the good folk of the English Riviera Bike Nights for their donation of £2500! The largest and longest running bike gathering in the Southwest sees bikes lined up for a mile along the prom on Wednesdays.

We receive no govt or NHS funding so donations like this are our lifeblood!
