to be fair, most of my family was shit, but my (single) mom could afford a nice 3-bedroom, in the city, on a bookkeeper's salary. As a woman, in the 80's.

I always hated my father. He was beyond abusive. He would frequently beat my mother to within an inch of her life. He beat us too... That's why, when he died suddenly of a heart attach, it felt like a blessing. But then he came back.

When he arrived at our door, we were shocked. Less by the fact that he was a zombie, but more that on his face he wore an expression of kindness and serenity. This was not the man we buried. This was not my father. It didn't matter to my mother. She Finally had the husband she had always wanted. It didn't matter to my brother. He finally had a male role model. But I could not enjoy his posthumous turn to grace because I knew it wasn't him.

I searched for a while for an explanation as to what happened to him. Until one day, my friend Rachel came at me with a single word "Dybbuk." We went to her rabbi and he advised me "well, usually a dybbuk will attach itself to a host body and make that body behave in a way that torments its loved ones until it has accomplished some goal. From what you've told me, about your father, it sounds like the dybbuk got confused." I asked "it has a goal? What does it want?" The rabbi said "Have your tried asking?"
