I also think that African identity and lived experience means that I don't think of the darkest skin tones as an exotic rarity that funnels directly to the African Super model archetype.

But rather it's a common skin tone that is just part of the spectrum of Blackness.

Vancouver's Black population tends to be lighter than the communities I am used to.
I have had people in community really virtue signal and pour on the "I can only imagine your experience...AS A DARKSKINNED PERSON" 🌚🌝

It does a number on my brain, when child Odera was considered light in Nigeria.

I 100% feel this as someone now living in the PNW, but whose foundational years were spent in NJ/NYC and Nigeria.

Anytime someone refers to me as darkskinned, I think that person doesn't recognize the spectrum and expansiveness of Black people globally. It's very binary thinking.

I definitely told a doctor who called me "very dark skinned" that she only thinks that because she also considers her (white) self the default.

I am glad that my melanin has recovered from long Scandinavian winters indoor though. I seriously considered a rotisserie set up.
