Someone I know who tallied spoiled votes yesterday said many of them were really vile, racist, misogynistic, one was even smeared with blood. The most common word was c*nt beside the candidates.

What does fascinate me is that the Irish presidential election was an example of meticulous raking through the pasts of every candidate no matter how spotless seeming and Maria Steen was going to run with her background in "Mysterious Organisation"

Thanks Gavan for thinking of us. It was a strange day. I have worked on elections down through the years. Today I was both shocked and saddened to see so many ballot papers desecrated by obscene and vulgar comments. Shame on those who thought this was okay. A sad day for our country.

Sorry but the fact that the RTE player subtitles just say "speaks Irish" instead of showing the actual Irish words really says it all, doesn't it...
