We're retrieving this data in real time to Movebank.org using ICARUS SigFox tags. Peru has partial IoT coverage along the coast which is proving great for coastal ecosystems. 1) SigFox coastal coverage; 2) fixes (white-direct transmission, black-requested from tag's memory)

Approaching the breeding season, pelicans use more open ocean habitat and less human dependent habitat. Gulls visit landfills more often.

Even Peruvian seabirds are centralized around Lima!
They came all the way from Chimbote, Ancรณn and Paracas, and seem to be prospecting for nesting colonies.
Most pelican breeding colonies were either wiped out or the nests abandoned during the last HPAI outbreak
There are no #Alouatta silhouettes in #Phylopic :/

It was an absolute delight especially with such a diverse cohort - ranging from Italy to Chile.

Hi! My name is Christina Winters and Iโm an aspiring wildlife biologist who currently works for CDFW on a small team monitoring the gray wolf population in the state as it evolves and expands. Iโm always open to learning and would love to connect and continue to grow!

I'm Diego and I work in diverse research projects in Peru, including camera trapping the rainforest and more recently wildlife tracking. I'm looking for funded PhD positions in Europe or Australia, so let me know if we have matching interests!

Science friends, introduce yourselves below and Iโll share! Who are you? What do you work on? Where are you based?
Iโll go first. Iโm David, and I study sharks and their conservation. Iโm based in the Washington, DC area.

25.09.2023 21:39 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This condor is being tracked with a GSM eobs GPS logger, so it only works in areas with cellular reception. Condors fly very high (>5000masl) so they can log into the network up in the sky when there's no reception in the ground. It's a relief when they log after over a week offline!

We have also started a monitoring program of Andean condors in Peru. We participated in a release of a rescued sub-adult male a month ago in Arequipa, and hope to continue working with the authorities in the future to track rescued wildlife and study their success.

We are also getting great data from a gull entering its breeding season, and also a possible new HPAI strain arrival with the northern migrants. This individual is exploring nearby islands and using urban spaces.
We need to tag more of these!
The data is directly uploaded to #MoveBank through the SigFox IoT network. In Peru this network has coverage in main cities, which are mostly spread along the coast; this allows us to get GPS fixes from these tags on migrating pelicans whenever they are near a city.

For my first post here, I'll share some information on what we're currently working on in Peru.
We're testing new GPS tags that work on the ICARUS SigFox IoT network. We're tracking Peruvian pelicans after they were hit hard by the HPAI outbreak, and are currently struggling with El Niรฑo
