I remember my parents having to pay $500 the one time I needed an ambulance (I was hit by a car as a pedestrian). My mother had USAA (military) insurance though and it paid back accident costs

I’m American (but have lived abroad for 14 out of 25 of my adult years) and I don’t get it either. The key seems to be employed with good insurance
