I know I’ve said this more than once, and I know it’s really obvious, but taking the train between cities in Europe is just fantastic. So easy.

One of the dumbest mistakes North America ever made, and continues to make, is doing so relatively little with trains. Train networks are nation-building.

Chris Hedges: I don't think these people feel any shame at all ...

The self-adulation is kind of off the charts, and they're not particularly introspective or self-critical

Sarah Swartz is from the Jewish Council of Australia. What she says, particularly in the last ten minutes or so, gives some insights into the impacts of Israel's behaviour on Jewish Australians.

You can judge any city by the quality and vitality of its places for public life. Here in Torino Italy it’s the many piazzas, the pedestrian streets, & the public market. Many cities had to claim these places back from cars.

Don’t have those kinds of places in your city? Are you sure you’re a city?

Barnaby Joyce in advanced talks with Pauline Hanson A shock defection by the former Nationals leader to Hanson’s party would cause another headache for the Coalition.

Fantastic.

I can't think of two people better suited to each other.

They'll need a larger meeting room to fit both egos in the door, and they'll need to buy a bigger bar fridge.

And just like the Mark Latham debacle, I give it 12 months.

I feel like a disabled autistic 15 year old child going missing and ending up with ICE/HHS should be far bigger news.

Especially considering he’s been located yet NOT returned to his mother.

This is kidnapping.

Yet the combination of racism & ableism means it gets ignored.

Just had to tell a drunk man at the express checkout to fuck off, when a clearly uncomfortable teenage girl he was trying to ask to a BBQ said no twice & he kept going, while men around who could see what was happening said nothing. Men. If you see this scenario , say something FFS! #nzpol

The government hasn’t hired enough members to make the Administrative Review Tribunal run properly and instead of hiring more their plan is to remove rights from people bringing cases instead. Why should ordinary people pay for government failures like this?!

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

Dormant coal mine turns green electricity generator in world-first test A disused coal mine in Wollongong will be the first test site for a renewable energy company that lowers weights down old mine shafts to spin turbines and create electricity.

I love this concept.

Use solar energy to lift incredibly heavy weights during the day, then drive turbines via the weights dropping during peak times. Apart from maintenance and updating tech it’s essentially free power forever.
