Y'all, I know two hours is a big time commitment, but this panel I arranged and hosted last month is one of the most important things I've ever done for video game history. The launch of the NES is a crazier story than most people realize, and my guests were extremely generous with their memories.

Still have a few backburnered projects for specific games that I want to do a similar thing for. I miss this version of the web.

Found my copy of FFXI from before the first expansion was even out.

Fun fact, you can probably see that even skinballs has a gun in the Saints Row universe!

And I know we share an equal hope that developers can also learn, sometimes it can be as simple as four floating orbs to make a huge difference in a game!

The nicest Halo 2 box I own. And it's a display only copy.

My #GDC2026 Game Preservation Roundtable proposal, co-moderated by @borman.bsky.social, was formally accepted! ๐Ÿฅณ

Too long has there been a complete lack of collaboration and communication between Industry and Institutional Game Preservation groups. It's time we start to fix that.

Iโ€™m also happy to report that the Skinballs legacy is preserved at The Strong National Museum of Play

Worth noting there are mods to play as skinballs, not only in Saints Row, but in other games. I saw one for a Dragon Ball Z game.

Some more evolution (with some of the same shots). Starting with February 1994 and April 1994, back in the days of Inferno, to CES in June 1994, September 94 that actually loads the VR arcade version by default, Alpha 2 in October 1994, Beta 2 in December, and a final-ish version in April 1995.

Some of the whispers I have heard around the industry, not from Square to be clear, is worry about retaliation for having taken things home.

Descent is super easy to run in DOSBox. It's also on GOG!

A few of the many user interface changes that Descent went through. From February 94, to April 94, to June 94. From the Volition collection at The Strong.

I know what the quote says, but I'm always curious what they mean specifically about being lost, and what might still be waiting to be recovered if someone really put the effort in

I'd really want to dive into that statement more. Do they mean code/code documentation specifically? They've shown some documentation in the past.

The "JPDEMO" from July 1994 was even more basic, unsurprisingly.

Even as of the Alpha 2 build of Descent in October 1994, the game's menu still didn't quite resemble its final form. From The Strong.
