Iโ€™ve not been able to read a book for three years due to my heart issues. But I broke the spell yesterday with this from my beloved friend and mentor, Richard Holloway. Former Primus of Episcopal Church I strongly recommend it for anyone trying to make sense of this life and this world. Astonishing

Isnโ€™t it the case that if Charles had died before heโ€™d had kids, Andrew would be king now? Time for a #NoKings movement here.

Itโ€™s worth remembering that if Prince Charles had died before he had children then (soon to be ex) Prince Andrew would now be king.

In todayโ€™s public history column in the @scotnational.bsky.social I interview @linda83ross.bsky.social about the social history of the coming of nuclear power to the Highlands of Scotland in the 1950s. And why almost everyone at the time seemed to think it was a great ideaโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m reading Nobodyโ€™s Girl by Virginia Giuffre.
Itโ€™s sickening. All of it.
This level of abuse could never have gone on without others knowing, staying silent and being casual witnesses. This โ€˜actionโ€™ by the โ€˜Palaceโ€™ is utter bullshit. We need a โ€œNo Kingโ€ movement in the UK

I agree. The odds are stacked against Whistleblowers. But looking at the power of the women victims of Epsteinโ€™s abuse they WILL have impact. They speak as a collective, theyโ€™re media savvy and they have strong political advocates.
We can learn to make it more successful. THEY wonโ€™t. We must

Have you ever been utterly enthralled by a movie and at the end said โ€˜ I donโ€™t really understand what that was about. But I donโ€™t regret a second of itโ€™? โ€˜The Man in the Hatโ€™ did it for me tonight. Free on Prime. And utterly enchanting. A movie that only the French could make.

I thought it was interesting that the action was taken by the state authorities. I donโ€™t know how/if the Church acted. The Popeโ€™s knowledge of the Church in Latin America will give him a very strong insight into whatโ€™s going on there. And what needs to be done. Hereโ€™s hoping for better days

Being a whistleblower is a long, lonely, tiring business. Itโ€™s also vitally important if society is to change for the better. I wish those brave women all that is good.

And fourthly, find sound politicians with a moral backbone ( who you may or may not agree with politically) who will advocate for you and ensure that you are heard. Youโ€™ll soon find out whoโ€™s serious and who isnโ€™t.

Thirdly a free press doing what a free press should be doing is, by and large, the whistleblowersโ€™ friend. Use the media. But get specialist advice if youโ€™ve not done it before. This is vital.

Secondly there is safety in numbers. This is rarely a place where single stories get anywhere. There literally is strength in numbers. As we saw today.
