That's true, though in my case, my mom, who taught in Mexico City in the late 1960s and was fluent, used to speak it around us growing up, and we had a family friend from Mexico, so I heard it all my life and got to practice, which is missing for me in relearning now.

This goes back even to the 1950s. Often looking up actors from the 1950s, I find they appeared on shows of the era based on movies.
Gidget (starring young Sally Field) is one of the few shows based on a movie I'd actually watched.
