02.02.2025 05:14 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0How many people who reply โrecipe?โ do you think actually go on to make the requested recipe in the following year? Iโd wager for the *vast* majority of posts where people comment โRecipe?โ they never actually make the relevant dishโฆ

29.01.2025 21:24 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Agreed. I am also disabled and have an autoimmune disorder. Preserving is a lot of work and Iโve had to endlessly adapt preserving methods so I can still do it. I do it for the joy and the unparalleled flavour. None of those in my preserving group do it for subsistence. Itโs not realistic & ableist
29.01.2025 21:08 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I canned 50lb of local peaches, 50lb of tomatoes and turned about 60kg fruit/veg into preserves of different sorts last summer. This was a huge amount of work and would not sustain 2 of us for 7 months. I live in a 500sqft apartment. I cannot store any more food. Itโs not workable
29.01.2025 20:47 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0Also, you live in NZ. As an Australian immigrant in Canada, you do not realize the huge climate advantage you have. Local produce stretches maybe 5 months where I am. Todayโs high is -11C and snow. Also buying bulk grains etc and fish is still a heavy reliance on the commodity food system.
29.01.2025 20:43 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0I did not understand this as an Australian. We are SO privileged with the ability to grow food domestically. I was in NC, then DC and now ON, ๐จ๐ฆ. The seasons shorten SO much moving north. My sister is in London, ๐ฌ๐ง and sheโs typically 6 weeks ahead of us produce wise. We have 5 months production here.
29.01.2025 20:31 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Especially somewhere like Canadaโฆ I see lots of folks in more amenable climates saying โbut I/we do this!โ. With all due respect, as an Australian immigrant in Canada, they have no idea what an advantage they have. You cannot make it work just anywhere. Are they aware of winter? No? Thought so.
29.01.2025 20:19 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This is wonderful but itโs not a solution for an entire city & it also requires that people have the time & physical ability to contribute to the garden. Itโs an incredibly enriching experience for some but itโs not a one stop solution which is the point the OP is making (& itโs still supplemented)
29.01.2025 20:13 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0As an avid preserver who lives in a 500 sqft apartment in Canada I agree. Local produce is highly seasonal & preserving is a LOT of work. It also requires resources to buy the food in bulk, the jars ($15-25CAD/doz), a pressure canner, space to store large numbers of jars and a huge amount of labor
29.01.2025 20:06 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I quashed this delusion pretty rapidly when my partner got LC. It takes some time to unlearn but the people like you are mentioning are often determined that they are โdifferentโ and โnot disabledโ. The internalised ableism runs so deep. I appreciate you having these conversations ๐
29.01.2025 19:59 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0100%. My doctor is currently looking for a new chronic pain competent psychologist for me. She is very wary of her patients just choosing just any mental health professional because of this and because if they donโt understand the challenges we face how can they properly help and not do harm?

It was a struggle but my final competition marmalade is complete! Off to the post office tomorrow! This one is โLemon and Meyer Lemon Marmalade with Local Honey and Foraged Elderflowerโ. So happy with how perfumed and floral it is ๐๐๐
Iโm loving how different each of my marmalades are this year!

18.01.2025 05:13 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0For those who arenโt aware there are much less awful prep protocols out there! 18.01.2025 04:51 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Clean air should be a right. Just like clean water. We have to fight for better air quality indoors through filtration& ventilation, & outdoors by addressing the climate crisis. Studies in Scandinavian daycares showed a 30% reduction in all respiratory illnesses with HEPA filtration. Itโs win-win!

The best time to eat a peach when it is perfectly ripe, juicy and fragrant, at the height of summer. The next best time to eat a peach is on a cold & snowy winterโs day. Here in the snow, that beautiful peach full of sunshine is suspended in a raspberry syrup. The winter peach is magnificent.
