EEF: ChatGPT cuts lesson planning by nearly a third The saved time did not come at the expense of quality, independent evaluation finds

So instead of fighting for smaller classes and more time to plan and collaborate with actual humans, districts will jump on this as the bold, innovative solution to teacher workload, and then gradually use the "efficiencies" to ... increase teacher workload. Why are we so gullible and short-sighted

Your toddler wants nothing more than to be like you.

To walk like you. To talk like you. To emulate your every move.

And sometimes they can get pretty creative about their approach.

I just love this video shared to TT by h3yitskaylee.

It seems to be denied or ignored by those who are in favour of the practice. And worse, other parts of the world are just now implementing similar universal screening instead of learning from UK experience.

What can quantitative analyses tell us about the national impact of the phonics screening check? - Education Policy Institute A new report published by the Education Policy Institute (EPI) examines the impact of the national phonics screening check (PSC) on early reading development in primary schools across England. Why hasn't this report had more publicity and more discussion? Or have I just missed it? The compulsory phonics screening test is taking up huge amounts of classroom time & yet seems to have no beneficial impact on either reading or writing.

So children are performing better on the tasks in the phonics screening, which makes sense given the mandated push for focusing on these skills. The article is citing evidence that reading achievement has not really changed & that fewer children are reading for pleasure. That is troubling.

Where does the idea come from that inquiry-based learning is the driving philosophy & principal practice of American public schools? It's a criticism I see frequently to justify a "shift" toward teacher-driven instruction when, from what I can tell, we never left in the first place. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

Parents Sue Lucy Calkins, Fountas and Pinnell, and Others Over Reading Curricula A first-of-its-kind lawsuit targets creators of whole-language reading curricula.

I wrote a whole paper in graduate school criticizing the Units of Study, so I’m not a fan by any means. Still, this is insane and sets a horrific precedent. It’s the type of zealotry that can only be found in the newly converted & under informed.

Wait, people are suing over curriculum??? Look, I’m a *huge* fan of public scholarship. It’s how I position most of my work & is sorely needed right nowβ€”but the fact a journalist podcaster with zero research background has set the literacy legislative agenda for half the country is wildly unhinged.

Fun fact about teaching at my Danish school: when we are sick, we’re not required to write sub plans because we’re sick.

The subs are paid well to come up with their own activities with the students. We also have the same staff of subs all year, so the students know them fairly well.

Thinking inside the box. πŸ“¦

Yesterday I shared some holiday gift giving advice, one piece of which resonated with many of you.

It was a note that your toddler may be just as interested in the box a toy comes in as the toy itself.
