Fresh Air dedicated a whole episode to an interview with and performances by the great young multi-instrumentalist Jerron Paxton, who has a new album out on Smithsonian Folkways. He's been a leading light in traditional blues for a decade, but has been under-recorded.

I just did a public interview with "Juke Joint" photographer Birney Imes and German photographer Axel KΓΌstner a couple months back in West Point, MS--they're old friends, and Birney had curated an exhibit of Axel's photos. Birney's a wonderful guy, and his other two photo books are great as well.

The earliest known β€˜country’ recording has been found. The singer? A Black man. A new release of an 1891 song by Louis Vasnier deepens what we know about the genre’s origins.

The story includes a link to a video featuring the wax cylinder recording from 1891 by New Orleans performer Louis Vasnier, which has been released on a 45rpm by @archeophone.bsky.social

The blues research community, notably the Real Blues Forum, is one of the main reasons I go to FB - many leading experts are there, and sub-sites have lots of rare video, scanned in vintage mags, etc. It's nominally limited to artists in the blues discographies, so no SRV vs Clapton debates
