02.12.2025 01:45 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Creating human habitation may be one of the *most* essentially humanist arts there is. Computers can help, but they can't replace the human-to-human conversation underlying a blueprint.
01.12.2025 23:25 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I think one piece that TechBros are missing about the value of AI is that every problem that humans have needs to take human users into account, and algorithms are not human. Even "STEM" things like engineering/architecture are deeply human activities that take human needs into account.
01.12.2025 23:24 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This blueprint is hilarious. My architect aunt had us drafting better layouts when we were 5.

01.12.2025 23:20 โ ๐ 16 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Everything I learned from being in bad interpersonal relationships with people who seem to have great potential but never change, I am trying to cross-apply to other relationships, lol.
01.12.2025 23:16 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Personally, besides trying to create assignments that are AI-proof (which is impossible to get 100% right), I am trying to convince students that they need to value authenticity, scholarship, truthfulness, etc., and to be fair, *most* of them do value those things.
01.12.2025 23:14 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It's frustrating, and I think it's extra frustrating since this is broadcast every day from the highest offices of government.
01.12.2025 23:12 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I know, you gotta just let it go though. There have always been students who got away with cheating, and there always will be. They're cheating themselves, they don't care, and there's no justice and may not ever be, and you don't control it. Focus on the kids doing good work who want to learn.

01.12.2025 20:53 โ ๐ 16 ๐ 10 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0For example, they could have told me when they released the second question ("early"), "we are making this exception due to the holidays," but that was not conveyed.
01.12.2025 21:02 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0My impression is that it was not the case to begin with, since both me and my advisor thought that the questions would be released as they were completed. My impression is that it is only the case now that they were caught being incompetent and it's a convenient loophole to blame.
01.12.2025 21:01 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The long email they prepared as a response to my pleas was very CYA-coded.
I said in the future, they should consider releasing the questions all at once instead of this dribbled-out nonsense. But they said basically, "no."
I got my next comps question.
NOW they tell me that they only release comps questions every 5 days (not "you have up to 5 days to answer it" but "you have to take 5 days to answer it") and that they "made an exception" when they released my other question after only 2 days.
The first time I had to "make a phone call home" on a kindergartener for his behavior, and heard what his parent said he would do to him when he got home, I was like, nope i quit.
01.12.2025 20:55 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I slept until 1 and woke up to numerous student emails, emails about my upcoming interview, but NO responses to my requests for my comps questions to be released, nor the questions.
01.12.2025 19:29 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0"Years and years ago, there was a production of The Tempest, out of doors, at an Oxford college on a lawn, which was the stage, and the lawn went back towards the lake in the grounds of the college, and the play began in natural light. But as it developed, and as it became time for Ariel to say his farewell to the world of The Tempest, the evening had started to close in and there was some artificial lighting coming on. And as Ariel uttered his last speech, he turned and he ran across the grass, and he got to the edge of the lake and he just kept running across the top of the water โ the producer having thoughtfully provided a kind of walkway an inch beneath the water. And you could see and you could hear the plish, plash as he ran away from you across the top of the lake, until the gloom enveloped him and he disappeared from your view. And as he did so, from the further shore, a firework rocket was ignited, and it went whoosh into the air, and high up there it burst into lots of sparks, and all the sparks went out, and he had gone. "When you look up the stage directions, it says, 'Exit Ariel.โ
Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de thรฉรขtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.
