Soon it was 10:21 and the class was dismissed to the cafeteria. Mid-morning snack was something coin-shaped, but larger, fuzzier, and bright school bus yellow. It was accompanied by Lima beans, applesauce, and milk.

Someone Sophia didn’t recognize took the seat across the table from her. “Did you ever figure out what the assigned problems were for Math yesterday?” she asked.

“How did you know I didn’t know them?”

“You told me yesterday, silly. You also told me you live on Maple Lane and your favorite—” She and everyone else except for Sophia took several bites at 10:26. “— color is green.”

Sophia was suspicious, but she couldn’t figure out how else she would have known those things. “No, I didn’t figure it out. I ended up just not doing them yesterday. How do you know which ones to do?”

“It’s really easy! You just pay close attention when the teacher gives the assignment, and then just go with whatever your gut says.”

The only thing Sophia’s gut had been saying lately was that she wasn’t hungry.

Sophia said, “I feel like I did that the best I could on my first day and I just got my paper back and it says I did the wrong problems.”

“Don’t worry. It can take some practice to get it right at first, but you can do it. You are in fifth grade now, you know.”

Sophia knew that nothing in nature was the color of the perfect cylinder in the largest section of her tray, but she didn’t have that level of certainty about her gut’s ability to understand what Mr. Armstrong clearly wasn’t saying. She wondered why such an easy question to answer had to be as hard for her as the Lima beans were.

Just As Real

The kids at the school in the bizarre alternate reality Sophia is trapped in eat precisely timed meals as often as hobbits. Some of the other expectations people have for her are even stranger and harder to figure out.

"One of the many benefits of being a grandmage is that you can always roast dinner to just the right temperature. This paid off greatly for Dav as he chomped down on the sweet, salty fat of the meat, enjoying the tart contrast of the cherry glaze in one delicious whirlwind."

Text - “We brought. . . some provisions,” said Sparky. Opening his bag. He shifted the contents and pulled out a bundle wrapped in cheesecloth. “I will. . . make toast.”

“I can make eggs,” added Desden. He dug around in his bag, pulling out a random assortment of dishes and silverware, followed by a plain wand. “Alright, how do you all like your eggs?”

“Ugh, no thanks. I don't want to play Demonlands roulette with my breakfast. I'll just have toast, please,” commented Dimamire turning to Sparky. Sparky nodded, retrieving a knife from his bag to slice the bread with.

Desden shrugged. The others looked at each other uncertainly. Grenda tapped her fingers a moment, then asked, “Do you think you could make a crab omelet?”

“I can give it a try,” agreed Desden. He picked up a plate and pointed the wand at it. There was a flash of white light from the tip of the wand, and a pile of egg stuffed with cheese and meat plopped down onto the plate. He picked up a fork and set it on the plate handing it to her. She allowed herself to smile, just for a moment as she took it.

“Okay, who's next?” asked Desden. Grenda stepped back and took a bite. It was perfect, tender fluffy eggs, layered with melted cheese bursting with a sharp sour flavor, sweet bits of caramelized onion, and delicate slightly salty crab meat.

Estella moved closer cautiously, “Okay, so what's the catch?”

Except from: The Fall of Ebonwald (White Cliff, book 1)

Mrs. Becker shrugs off my mom’s arm and takes a huge breath in. “I can’t do this.” That’s when I smell the distinct odor of something that’s been on the stove too long. It must reach Mrs. Becker’s nose at the same time because she gasps and flips over a pancake and exclaims, “And on top of everything, I burnt the pancakes. I burnt the freaking pancakes.

Post image Post image “Lianyu, someone’s here for you,” Chenyu called, never taking his eyes away from the newly printed books, accustomed to the periodic visits from Songxiu. There was clearly question in the older man’s eyes why the governor’s wife would look for him, but he kept it to himself.
Lianyu’s smile widened, though it he couldn’t smile anymore as soon as he saw her expression.
“Songxiu…?” he asked, approaching her with caution. She looked tired, her lips stretched thin.
“I need help choosing vegetables again,” she said. This had started since they were children. Her parents sent her out to buy vegetables and after one too many times bringing back home rotten lots, she asked him for help. She kept asking, even after she married.
He wanted to ask what was wrong, what could he help with, but knew it was not the time or place. Chenyu already waved him off. Business had been slower, anyways—and his boss would like nothing more than to dock Lianyu’s pay for the hours he spent away. He only ever docked half, though.
So, he walked with her down the Imperial Avenue like usual. There, she took deep breaths and lead the way to the markets.
“How’s this one?” she asked, picking up a clearly rotten persimmon. He bit back a smile as he took it from her hands, showing her the stem that was already blacked from being left out too long.
Lianyu said, “See? It smells a little rotten, too. It’ll have a black center.”
Her brows furrowed, she pouted like always and said, “It has a nice orange color. And was firm instead of mushy.”
“There’s a lot you need to keep track of,” he replied. “But it’s worthwhile, right? Like this will be sweet and delicious.”
Songxiu looked at him with those wide eyes, sighing and packing the ones that he handed her. He chose the vegetables for her too, which she accepted—though her attempt to choose a choi sum was poor (how did she always manage to find the one infested with worms?).
