The horses are depicted with simple, yet accurate shapes, with that bright orange edge to their silhouettes giving them form and depth.

Born in Penns Grove, New Jersey in 1886, Hennings studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Academy of Fine Arts Munich.

You can feel the cold of the snow thanks to those blues and lavenders in the shadows and the dark mountains beyond, but the contrasting orange of the buildings and even the whites in the snow convey that wonderful sense of warmth from the sun.

The "Nicolai Fechin: An Artistic Journey" exhibition is on view until April 5, 2026.

This piece was in the possession of the sitter's family until it went up for auction just this past year.

A smaller painting, it shows how much can be said with just a few well placed brushstrokes. The hand is beautifully exaggerated, adding to the playfulness expressed by the eyes.

My guess is that Sargent added the wax crayon highlights in the foliage and the pattern on the left at the end, completing this circling effect.

The more rendered faces of the other two figures, along with the active patterns of the ground and foliage beyond, surround her with details, making her the focal point by reversing the expected contrast between textural and less textural areas.

The choices made in regard to the focus of the painting are very interesting. Emily is the least rendered of the three. This may be the result of her actual movements over the course of the painting.

It's a great example of how adding detail outside of the focal area can draw attention to it.
