This demo, painted from direct observation, was all about retaining color intensity. Rather than adding white to the light areas, I used color temperature contrast.

This demo was an exercise in simplifying lesser elements in order to tell a story. For me, this scene is all about what lies beyond the tunnel, an off-leash park where our dogs loved to play. The goal was to invite the viewer’s eye through the tunnel by playing down everything around it.

I also love the way Khnopff uses the texture of the canvas to suggest the texture of the tablecloth with washes of thin paint.

Born in 1858, Khnopff studied at the Académie Royal des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the Académie Julian in Paris.

The composition is wonderfully balanced, using value difference between foreground and background, the color notes of the large door on the right versus the small red flower on the left, and the repeating rectangles throughout the piece.

This is a piece that I had never seen on display in my prior visits to the museum, and I found it very helpful in regard to some of my own recent still life work.

I never start with a drawing, but just start painting in shapes of color, continuing to push the values in the most important areas. In this case it's the eyes. I make a lot of mistakes, but correct as I go. Working this way adds a lot of energy to any subject.

We just visited the same street last week, and it has significantly changed. While everything in this painting remains, the street is no longer open to traffic, and it's now filled with tables and chairs. I've always found New York fascinating due to its constant evolution.

Here you can see the thickness of the paint and the flowing brushstrokes. While this is just a small sketch in preparation for his masterpiece, "Madame X," I prefer the casual approach. “Sargent and Paris” closes this weekend, so if you can, be sure to go see it.
