Imagine a hypothetical fascist regime coming to power, tracking messages or websites visited by dissidents. It could quickly identify and suppress them—through threats like deportation—before any legal process could intervene, as fascism involves the forcible silencing of opposition.

The thing is this is really dangerous once those in power no longer follow previously established values of society.

Thats crazy. That data must be so valuable, going to such great extend to gather it.

Was it just marketing opportunism rather than a genuine commitment to values?

Weil Populismus. Kernwählerschaft ist in Rente „und wir haben führer auch schwer arbeiten müssen“. Wenn die jungen Leute nur so viel arbeiten würden wie wir früher wäre unsere Rente sicher.
