Catured #MalaninXMarket at #SankofaSquare #inTORONTO today. It was a great vibe.

From wonderful vendors, great company, to yoga. It was a great launch to series that I feel will make a good vibes mark on the city, in the aptly renamed public square.

Look out for my #SpacialSnapshots audiovisuals

Mr. Carney,

Congratulations on winning the Liberal party leadership race.

While I'm glad to see the poll numbers dropping for Poilievre's CPC, I have strong reservations around many of your statements both in your campaign and in your prior work, including your book Value(s).

It's been clear to many observers for quite a while that the tech industry has been pushing the overton window toward austerity, autocracy, and fascism. Yet your statements over the last few years demonstrate a persistent willingness to side with that very industry, despite their goals having become more and more obvious.

Is this how a reasonable, rational economist views the world? That even when their equations fail time and time again to match up with reality, they stubbornly refuse to change their approach?

Here are a few examples of what I'm getting at:

Here are a few examples of what I'm getting at:

1.
AI:
You are pushing for the Canadian Government to invest in and/or adopt Artificial Intelligence technologies.

Today, as it happens we're seeing where this leads: the US is implementing AI as a cover for xenophobic attacks on political speech.ย https://www.axios.com/2025/03/06/state-department-ai-revoke-foreign-student-visas-hamas
People may rightly point out that there are (limited) use cases for things like Machine Learning, such as simulating protein folding.

Sure. However, your fellow central banker, Stephen Poloz, was recently trying to push Canada's public pension funds to invest in the build-out of hyperscale data centres. These are not built for ML applications, but instead are almost exclusively for Generative AI, a technology that has not found a single societally beneficial product-market fit.

Moreover, the AI industry is also wasting money & resources (particularly when it comes to water) at an alarming rate. The notion, repeated by you, that AI is 'an essential part' of a climate solution, is purely industry propaganda - and it's not clear to me if you don't realize this, or simply don't care.

To the contrary: 'AI' been far more effective at helping the oil industry pump fossil fuels out of the ground more cheaply. And even a first-year econ student can tell you what that means.

2.
Fintech:
Your book praises Shopify as a fintech having a positive societal impact. It also takes a supportive view of things like smart contracts, as well as Facebook's 'Libra', without once mentioning that Libra was near-universally seen as an existential risk to the currencies of smaller nations - and, in its 'basket of currencies' version, a threat even to the global financial system.

While it's true that, back in 2021, the explicitly far-right and libertarian politics of Shopify's leadership may not have been so widely known, it's clear that trusting these fintech folks is no longer an option. What we actually need, as many have said, is to move slow and fix things.

This continued fascination with 'fintech innovation' represents a massive liability for you, and I urge you to reconsider your willingness to glom onto whatever the shiny new disruption of the day is.

Climate tech:
Speaking of which, you've also shown a consistent tendency to boost things like hydrogen fuel, electric vehicles, and direct-air carbon capture as paths to zero emissions, but not things like government investment in public transit or high-speed rail.

I don't know if Brookfield has investments in the former, but those technologies are not the transformative change we need if we're to avert the worst case climate disaster looming ahead.

We need collective solutions, not more of the same approaches that got us into this mess.

Thanks for reading. I appreciate your time, and I sincerely hope you'll reconsider the direction you're pursuing. This is a critical time for our country; I'd hate for us to work so hard to avoid Poilievre only to be sold out to the US tech oligarchy by other means.

Yours, etc.
