A beauty! Whatโs her name?
26.11.2025 07:01 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0How about some Florence Price for Wednesday in the form of her piano quintet?
Listen to it all if you have time, or the still, spacious andante at 16โ30 followed by the joyous Juba at 22โ30.

Excellent - will look him up. Thank you

25.11.2025 08:59 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Iโm starting Tuesday with Dvorak, his heart-felt cello concerto.
He was emphatic about its final shape, writing to his publisher, โI give you my work only if you will promise me that no one โฆ shall make any alteration in it without my knowledge and permission.โ

Monday morning joy to get you up and at โem!
Rejoice greatly from Handelโs Messiah.

Great stuff isnโt it?! Glad you enjoyed it too ๐๐ถ
23.11.2025 14:24 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Something flutey from Chaminade for Sunday morning.

Oh dear!! Hope Handel can help you through it! ๐
22.11.2025 13:38 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A snippet from todayโs topic - De Torrente from Handelโs Dixit Dominus. It talks of drinking deeply from the refreshing stream in the context of tiredness & adversity. Itโs so beautiful - a perfect way to start the w/e.
To put it more succinctly - this is stunning. Listen!

Word of the day is โquockerwodgerโ (19th century): a puppet politician whose strings are pulled entirely by someone else.

18.11.2025 20:09 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I went to see The Choral today. What a lovely film! It is very moving and, of course, I adore the music of Elgarโs Gerontius. Big recommend.
16.11.2025 20:29 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Purcellโs Fantasia on one note - gentle contemplative music for Sunday morning.
The tenor line literally holds on to a single note throughout. (I like the suggestion that Purcell had a mate who couldnโt really play, so this allowed him to take part.๐)

Ooh I donโt know this but perhaps ought to. Iโd it as good as the violin concerto?

15.11.2025 12:48 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0If you want a helping hand to widen your awareness of the classical repertoire, do join one of my online groups. You would be completely welcome whatever your prior knowledge of the repertoire. And I donโt choose duffers! If weโre listening to it, thereโs a reason!
15.11.2025 12:48 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I cannot stress enough that there is more to classical music than Mozart and Beethoven (both of whom I adore!) There is also so much more than โRelaxing Adagios.โ
15.11.2025 12:48 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Golly. First Schoenbergโs Verklรคrte Nacht earlier in the week and today, Smetanaโs Piano Trio. Music appreciation classes where almost nobody knew the music in advance, and everyone ended up incredibly moved and emotional. I donโt think weโve had so many tears since we met during lockdown.
15.11.2025 12:48 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Smetanaโs Piano Trio was written soon after he lost his 4 year old daughter. In a devastating period of around 5 years, he lost 3 daughters and his wife.
The highly emotional Trio reflects his pain and anger and deep anguish. Itโs the subject of todayโs music appreciation.

Itโs so depressing. Iโm desperate for Labour to stop pratting about because if they fail, what follows is likely to be awful. I cannot fathom what the hell they are playing at - how CAN they be this inept?!
14.11.2025 08:53 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thatโs certainly what Iโve been thinking.
14.11.2025 08:49 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0New season for Clevedon Adult Studies has dropped! Iโm talking about Violin Concertos on 21st March - what a gorgeous day this will be!! Bach, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Korngold and a zillion others.
Would love to see you there!

Things they donโt tell you about performing:
1) the night of a gig youโll barely sleep. May as well plan housework or tax return and make use of the time
2) the night AFTER the night of a gig, youโll sleep like a fairytale princess. Plan nothing after 7pm, turn the light out before 8pm and lean in.
Donโt think I knew there was evidence he was directly influential - tell me more please! ๐
