Chrono Trigger IS an amazing game! I played Mario RPG long ago and I don't remember the Dark Knight fight but I'm not super surprised to hear that since I remember finding Link and Samus napping and I fought a very FF-esque side boss at one point

We're big fans of FF2. Like you said, the controversy is understandable, but it worked for us. The progression mechanics were really interesting IMO
