Local and broad-scale anthropogenic controls on sediment transport in the Western Ghats rivers Sediment discharge in rivers is changing due to climate change and human activities. A study in India's Western Ghats shows significant declines in sediment load, due to a combination of rainfall variations and human impacts, including illegal sand mining, highlighting the need for integrated management strategies to enhance ecological health.

A COST Action on energy geostructures The Geohazard Group, represented by Gianvito Scaringi, collaborates within COST Action FOLIAGE to advance energy geostructures across Europe. Despite their potential for enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprints, challenges impede large-scale adoption. The initiative fosters interdisciplinary research, training, and support for young researchers, continuing until September 2026.

Not only landslides: the Geohazards Group participates in a pan-European network on Energy Geostructures. Find out more here:

Check out our latest publications! In 2025, the Geohazards Group's research highlighted significant advancements in understanding geohazards, including landslide risk assessments, thermal sensitivity of landslide soils, and innovative modelling techniques. Key studies focused on landslides in Nepal and Europe, as well as a catastrophic debris flow in India, enhancing insights into the impact of climate change and natural disasters.

Influence of temperature on the residual shear strength of landslide soil: role of the clay fraction The occurrence and fate of landslides are, among other factors, controlled by the shear strength of the materials involved and by how this strength changes during the landslide process. Temperature affects the strength of pure clays according to their mineralogy, stress history, and hydro-mechanical boundary conditions. However, natural soils often consist of heterogeneous mixtures of various clay and non-clay minerals. The effect of temperature on the residual shear strength of low-plasticity soils, in particular, remains poorly understood.

Was not expecting to open the main CBC page this morning and see this!

In today’s climate, I feel our message is even more relevant than even just a few months ago when the interview was recorded.

A French researcher going to a conference in the US had his phone and computer searched (and then confiscated) and was refused entry and expelled because they found stuff critical of Trump.
I guess lucky that he wasn't detained for weeks?
Don't travel to the US. No conference is worth the risk
