You’re the first commenter I’ve seen who’s not called this a “very serious case”. I’m loathe to give this administration any leeway on doing the right thing, and the consensus so far seems to be “Yeah, it’s clearly political retribution, but perhaps in this case he deserves it…” Love to hear more.

More Than 170 U.S. Citizens Have Been Held by Immigration Agents. They’ve Been Kicked, Dragged and Detained for Days. The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And near...

BREAKING from PP

We found immigration agents have held more than 170 *citizens*

The govt doesn't track citizens held. So we did. We tallied:

Nearly 20 kids, two w/ cancer

More than 20 citizens held for day or more, incommunicado

It would be my hope the main point of this is to disincentivize against shutdowns, and if it does happen then the gridlock ends as a consequence, but apart from edge cases (e.g. happening within striking distance of a regular election) I fear that like anything this could be weaponized politically.

New constitutional amendment: if the government shuts down, it triggers new House elections — and maybe some Senate ones too. Everyone’s term ends X days after the shutdown, and the newly-elected reps serve out the remainder of the existing session.

it is ALWAYS worth pointing out who gets to be just a helpless little innocent precious baby boy at the age of 34, vs. who is framed by the cops as a big scary dangerous man whose candy bar might be a gun when he's barely in middle school, or described as a "13-year-old woman" by her predator

Those who have received RIF notices cannot prepare for their upcoming terminations because the
human resources staff who would typically assist them are also furloughed. One union president
representing workers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention described how human
resources staff were brought back into the office last weekend to work on issuing RIF notices, and
then, once they had completed this work, were told “to issue RIF notices to themselves.”2 Dkt. No.

It is also far from normal for an administration to fire line-level civilian employees during a
government shutdown as a way to punish the opposing political party. But this is precisely what
President Trump has announced he is doing, by taking to social media on the second day of the
shutdown to post: “I have a meeting today with Russ Vought,[3] he of PROJECT 2025 Fame, to
determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he
recommends to be cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent. I can’t believe
the Radical Left Democrats gave me this unprecedented opportunity.” Dkt. No. 15 (“Am. Compl.”)

I’m sure this was the plan all along: almost no one would sign the pledge, and whoever did wouldn’t have been allowed to report on what they saw. The only thing on the line was the integrity of the news outlet.

The fact that he’s treating the whole thing as if the outcome rests solely on the racial makeup of Congress is probably all you need go know about what’s motivating his position. “It’s racist to say that Black voters would vote for more Black candidates!” No one is saying that but you, my guy.

Listening to the lawyer who insists that Black and white voters don’t really vote any differently — i.e. don’t tend to vote for Black candidates — and I’m like… dude, that is so not the point. The point is that Black VOTERS have a chance to exercise their political power, no matter who they elect.

Zohran Mamdani Is Threading One of the Trickiest Needles in Politics For the general election, Mamdani has managed to expand his base while staying basically true to his primary-season beliefs. There’s a lesson in there for all Democrats.

Mamdani's primary campaign was brilliant and exciting. His general election campaign has been less exciting but equally savvy. He 1. broadened his voting base and 2. courted the Dem establishment without 3. sacrificing any parts of his very-progressive platform.
