Definitely a contributor to it but I think it went even higher. We shifted aim from getting kids at 17-20 ready for the first team into building a team of 21-24 year olds who could win PL2 but would never be good enough for the first team

For all the criticism Moyes got for dithering on throwing some of the kids in (Barkley especially), it’s been a huge downhill trend since. We used to have the best academy in the business, something has gone massively wrong along the way
