The phrase β€˜Call me Ishmael’, the first sentence of the book, is highlighted in blue, with careful highlighting on the very big C at the start. Above this, written in ballpoint pen β€˜His name’

Full review of Everybody Kenmure Street for Scottish Left Review here. It’s a poignant, funny and politically vital film. It’s also about the street I was raised on and a day of infectious, unforgettable, freedom. So quite an emotional piece to write ❀️✊

Plans for vital motorway repair plan to go on show in Glasgow The public, drivers and residents are being invited to view plans for a permanent solution for a vital motorway viaduct in Glasgow.

Consultation events on "early options" for a "permanent" replacement for the Woodside Viaduct of the M8.

Probably a once in a generation opportunity to replace that section of the M8 - or lock us into the status quo

If children were more politically active they would be quite pissed to be told that their screen time is β€œthe most urgent public health issue” while the largest measles outbreak since the vaccine sweeps their schools because of conspiracies that the adults in their life believed from social media.

BBC warns Russia is taking over World Service radio frequencies Russian propaganda is filling the void where the BBC has closed World Service radio services due to cuts

BBC's Arabic radio service in Lebanon closed after 85 years as part of a Β£28.5m savings drive. 'Just months later, in October 2023, the Russian state-owned Sputnik news agency took over the frequency. Its news bulletin opened with β€œThis is Moscow”, replacing the previous β€œThis is London” intro.' πŸ™„

There’s a lesson for the ages in the Murrell story about where the capture of grassroots politics inevitably leads no doubt, but it’s also just a sorry tale of how Scotland’s executive class have learned to use the leeway devolved nationhood gives them to operate with impunity.

I was looking at a first edition of Edwin Morgan's The Second Life today. It has the dates when the poems were written. Strawberries was composed on the 20th and 21st January 1965. I like it even more now than I know it's a happy memory of summer recollected in the Glasgow winter dark.

While people who would probably qualify as liberals risk their lives in the frozen streets of Minneapolis (and do similar brilliantly organized solidarity work in New Orleans and Chicago and many other cities), not sure what this is supposed to mean.

We now know what many already guessed -the tiny strata of people who have been placed at the pinnacle of human wealth, status and luxury lead utterly empty lives. They can’t even express themselves in coherent sentences. It’s the kind of loss of face that did for the nomenklatura forty years ago.

As someone who’s spent a fair bit of my life either singing folk songs or having doomed homosexual romances, watching a film starring two of Hollywood’s leading heartthrobs that’s about *both* was quite strange.

A very good example of why the status quo on defamation is not sustainable from a costs perspective. Maybe anybody issuing a libel claim should have to provide security for costs of the amount required to reach at least the first substantive hearing.
