I was referring to the story itself, not the writer. People are fallible, but stories say what can’t be said (as Toni Morrison said, “to speak the unspeakable”) and to do what can’t be done (like achieving some kind of justice). And in moments like this, stories offer (a bit of) solace.

Made me think of Margaret Atwood’s short story “The Stone Mattress”, published in The New Yorker. It has the most satisfying ending, which we know can only be found in fiction because, well, real life is unfair and misogyny is everywhere.
