Huh. I think that might include this kind of novels, but be broader in scope, as well…

Most of the examples definitely come from outside traditional genre publishing, but I can think of some examples from firmly within, as well. Ken MacLeod's The Stone Canal and The Sky Road, from his Fall Revolution series, include 1970s student protest strands, and post-singularity mind uploading.

Real question – is there a term of art for the Cloud Atlas-style novel that includes historical, contemporary, and future/science fiction-style strands?

And if there isn't, why not?

all a writer has to do is say "wow that sure was a bummer that no one read the thing i put so much work into!" for the community to start banshee shrieking "write for yourself or fail" as if writing for ourselves AND wanting as social creatures for our art to be seen and acknowledged can't coexist

Or, AI-native feeds could destroy existing social media in the same way that social media gutted the previous ecosystem.

Maybe it's evolving towards the perfect distraction engine, an infinite chain of dopamine microdoses, good enough to watch, bad enough you always need just one more.

I am really curious to see what this does to viewership.

My cynical side says "nothing," that TikTok and most of YouTube and Instagram were already empty calories and it won't impact their model at all. Could make it more powerful, more addictive, in fact?

So… with Sora2 out, how long before we get articles about the professional streamers/influencers who suddenly see their viewership numbers plummet toward zero as the algorithm pivots to an infinite amount of free genAI bullshit?

All dogs (and turkeys) go to heaven: Pets receive blessings at Nelson church The pets were invited into St. Saviour's Pro-Cathedral to mark the annual Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

On Saturday, a local church invited the public to have pets blessed during the annual Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Most were dogs, but one was a turkey named Aziza. I consider this story a gift from Heaven.

Genuinely think we should bring back "lost Earth colony world with some weird shit going on" science fiction as a major sub-genre. It just needs a snappy name!

Also: I think SF&F publishers should extend their newfound enthusiasm for the novella and re-embrace the short novel, specifically the 50-65k words/ 180-220 pages range.

And then I think works that are 40-50k should be marketed as either a novella or a novel based on what they are.

Said it before, will say it again (10,000 times, probably) but the opinion and op-ed section is the least essential section of any news outlet.

Opinion's elevation above reporting is the worst thing that's happened to journalism.

1. This is excellent.

2. As @redfernjon.bsky.social points out, marketing categories are blurry & often arbitrary

3. This is esp. true of SF&F where many of the works labeled as novellas are short novels but aren’t marketed as such

4. More SF&F writers should learn to write actual novellas

I've been seeing a lot of this even in books that seem like they should be more driven, pulpier, more plot & action-focused. What frustrates me about itβ€”to be clear, I adore a contemplative lost-in-the-landscape literary meanderβ€”is when it seems to stem from a televisual concept of *time*.

Great time to be building another oil pipeline from Alberta to the sea, by the way. Definitely won't become a white elephant that's also a moral stain on Canadians. Nope. No way.

"Solar and wind are now growing fast enough to meet new demand and begin cutting into fossil generation. As deployment accelerates, Ember expects clean power to outstrip demand growth for longer stretches, pushing fossil fuels into permanent decline."

In a first, renewables generate more power than coal globally Solar and wind power aren’t just keeping up with global electricity demand anymore – they’re pulling ahead. According to a new analysis from energy think tank Ember, solar and wind combined outpaced global electricity demand growth in the first half of 2025. That shift led to a drop in both coal and gas generation compared to the same period last year. For the first time ever, renewables generated more power than coal globally. more…

The fun thing about writing near-future science fiction is looking up tide charts and dike heights and planning where to plant the bombs, but you don't have to go to jail afterwards.
