if you ever played a narrative RPG and someone in your party died and you decided to NOT reload a save because of the emergent story, that RPG succeeded. And no amount of codified "realistic" mechanics can substitute for that, and usually they do the opposite, only highlighting the artifice

Oh yeah, I dont think it's societally bad or anything. More that an act of interfacing with an RPG usually requires actual effort from the player to maintain the illusion (the better written it is, the easier the illusion) and having clear social mechanics (like links) does threaten to shatter it.
