Of late my life has been afflicted by several of those annoying types who say they're going to do something, then...don't. Life's stand-uppers. It shows a fundamental disrespect for other people's time and energy. I know it can be hard to say no at times, but /1

There are healing charms in both Old English and Old High German that both postdate conversion in those regions and mention the Germanic gods, but off the top of my head I don't know of any specifically in Old Norse. I'll see if I can uncover any

Edward the Confessor, holding court in Oxford, agreed to Northumbrian rebels’ demands to outlaw Earl Tostig #OTD in 1065. The king sent Harold Godwineson, earl of Wessex, to inform the northerners, who were camped in Northampton. #medievalsky

Jim Gavin was a nominee in the Irish presidential race, until he pulled out at the weekend due to a scandal whereby he owed a former tenant €3,300. Not sure what Putin and fascists have to do with this.

A distinctive feature of Northern British English: the use of 'love' /lʊv/ as an informal, friendly way to address strangers of the opposite sex. Shopkeepers use it to address customers - "alright love? /Ι™raΙͺt lʊv/ A variant you will also sometimes hear is 'pet'

β€˜Nickname’ is not β€˜nick’ + β€˜name.’

It was originally β€˜ekename.’

β€˜Eke’ was the Middle English word for β€œalso” or β€œin addition.”

Since β€˜ekename’ began with a vowel, people used β€˜an’ before it.

Over time, 'an ekename' became 'a nickname.'
