As I've said before, the "inevitability" of AI is vastly overstated. Parents and educators who don't want their children and students saturated with it can resist.

I opened this article, and f!@#$ing Elsevier immediately popped up an intrusive and unwanted offer to use "AI" to summarize it. I somehow don't think commercial academic publishers are on our side.

Notice how this doctor contrasts the β€œpromise” of AI with its known defects. Once again, no one is compelling people to concede its greatness; we’ve just decided as a society that it’s acceptable to both-sides AI by counterbalancing criticism of its failures with promotion of its unproven potential.

A thing existing and being used by some people does not mean said thing is the future, nor does it mean everyone must accept its use and begin using it.

It especially does not mean that when said thing is a class of technology controlled by a small number of wealthy authoritarian minded sociopaths.

all academics should know that the goal of administrators and tech companies forcing gAI into higher education is also to train the machines to replace us, please don’t lie to yourself or imagine you’re special.

yes, this happened to a cis person in this case. yes, it will happen to more cis people. i would love it if people could stop acting as if that is now the reason to care

There are so many other interesting ideas and important problems for us to be caring about but every channel has to be tuned to all AI all the time

Mamdani Leads NYC Mayor Race By Nearly 20 Points: New Poll Pollsters spoke to registered voters citywide between Aug. 4-7.

New poll!
Mamdani 44
Cuomo 25
Sliwa 12
Adams 7

Pretty great news, and this is not the main takeaway, but do pause a moment to consider exactly how thoroughly you have to screw up to be the incumbent mayor of New York City and poll at 7 percent. patch.com/new-york/was...

Meta brought AI to rural Colombia. Now students are failing exams When Meta embedded AI bots in its apps, even students in the most remote corners of Colombia gained access. But rather than boosting learning, it’s getting in the way.

AI is a disaster for education at all levels.

This is a very writing studies-centered skeet, but… the way that some in the field are tying themselves into knots to advocate for some β€œethical uses” of GenAI really emphasizes the field’s shallow investment in anything like β€œjustice” or β€œdecolonization” or β€œabolition.”

We have been playing fucking Cassandra for the last decade-plus and now that the Trojan War on Queer People is here we are expected to act like no one could have seen this coming

Yes, all our institutions is telling them LLMs are intelligent and capable of doing tasks like this so they are assuming the "hallucinations" were a fluke

We need a science journalist to write a history of AI researchers promising a breakthrough to human-like cognition is coming in 5-10 years.

Always 10 years from a breakthrough has been the joke line about AI work since I was a teenager.

11.08.2025 11:29 β€” πŸ‘ 70    πŸ” 11    πŸ’¬ 6    πŸ“Œ 2

Absolutely not. Because of the organization of the enterprise of AI in education around the aims of finance capitalism, "teaching AI" will result in the erosion of the educational enterprise and its further organization around capitalist, neo-liberal ideologies.

11.08.2025 02:58 β€” πŸ‘ 70    πŸ” 18    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 1

Sure we could reduce the student to teacher ratio, and create an education system that we know works for students. But that would cost money, so bring in the slop.

"Not every harm or manipulation has been intentional, because Big Tech doesn’t move with intention. It moves with indifference, clawing its way to higher valuations and a larger user base. Fostering dependence is a normal business practice in Silicon Valley."

Periodic reminder that the Humanities are often financially in the black due to lower overhead.

Also freshmen composition/communication courses are cash cows for universities and that $ is often β€œdisappeared” from the discussions of English or Rhet Comp budgets and needs.

everyone assumes that doing a phd makes you know lots of things but really what it does is make you terribly aware of how many things you just don’t know and will probably never have enough time to learn

they're going to take the 3rd option which is to do dog-dick all and say some mealy mouthed "we need to compromise" bullshit because the establishment dems are all fucking worms and they're enabling the genocide of me and my friends and i'm sick of not being able to say that.

As easy as it is to mock these people, this is actually super concerning because these people desperately need help and it points to another major problem with AI beyond plagiarism and environmental damage.
