songs used to be about taking your sweetie to the ice cream parlor but nowadays they are all about the delicate scrimshaw patterns found on the bones of a beached leviathan

Trump Signs Executive Order That Threatens to Punish States for Passing AI Laws The order creates a Justice Department task force to challenge state AI laws and directs the Commerce Department to pull future broadband funding from states that pass β€œonerous” legislation.

the AI industry powers authoritarianism, a necessity condition that allows the industry to steal, destroy the environment, monetize education, surround us with perpetual surveillance,... all uncontested

What happens when you get sucked in by AI hype and don't understand how chatbots work; errors are not exceptions but how these models work.

We can only hope that the Canadian government will wake up and stop repeating AI industry marketing speak and start paying attention to research?

Learning management systems also of course lock in institutitions to multi-year budget-raiding subscription contracts, enforce templates that restrict pedagogic autonomy, and claim extra value from turning usage data into feature upgrades, *in addition* to being major time and labour drains

There isn't a single problem "solved" by edtech that couldn't be fixed with smaller classes led by well-paid teachers given real academic freedom

People really think it’s authoritarian to not be able to publish things like β€œglobal warming isn’t real” and β€œvaccines are bad”. Like somehow the right to ideologically manipulate the public into believing in non reality for financial benefit is some kind of intrinsic β€œgood”

So while that frame is detached from reality, like the AI ideology wants us to be generally, it's common. Binaries like techno-pessimist vs -optimist exist but are not the only positions & are BOTH misinformed and damaging. Academics who are critical and outspoken of the tech industry are neither!

It's not that "the Internet" is worse or "enshittified" or whatnot. That's just clinging to the belief that the Internet is special and separate from the "real world".

The world is being made worse by capitalism in a massive way.

12.12.2025 13:06 β€” πŸ‘ 96    πŸ” 20    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 2

my big issue with "enshittification" as a term is that it represents what it critiques: a general decline in facility with metaphor, overall literary cleverness, public intellectual culture itself. Compare with a term like Twain's "The Gilded Age"

Now, the above assumes a neurotypical, fully supported student. Let me rephrase: the fifteen credit hour student is premised on an idealized image of who a student is and what they are capable of. It assumes certain social and material resources that make possible the kind of dedication needed.

I'm going to float this nuclear take: maybe students are increasingly turning to ShitGPT and other deskilling devices because the structure of the modern university has made it impossible for them to acquire skill in a deep way.

Let me paint a picture for you.

This is excellent. Kudos to all involved.

β€œTech… interventions, especially those offered as one-size-fits-all solutions for educational problems, do not improve student, faculty, instituΒtional, or research outcomes. In many instances, their use harms students as well as faculty members and staff.”

The sharp divide between what I hear from students about AI and what administrators say about AI makes it impossible to believe anyone in admin has ever spoken to one of our students

Please tell me I am not the only person who will spend 5-10 minutes finding full text of a book online rather than getting off the couch, going downstairs, and finding the actual hard copy of same book on my bookshelf.

also, by the way

a lot of us process our grief by making art

they're trying to replace that process with AI from both directions

This headline isn't just *misleading*, this is a deliberate attempt to create a false narrative about life-saving medical care. Absolutely fucking disgusting.

I tend to think of slop as the negative platonic form: not the ideal that particulars aspire toward, but the silhouette left when you subtract everything that would make a specific instance rather than a thing of a type. What remains when you've successfully avoided all such situatedness.

"We deserve better. The users being deceived deserve better. And the future of AI must be built on something other than our broken humanity. Until then, remember that an AI girlfriend responding to your loneliness might just be a man in a Nairobi slum, wondering if he'll ever feel real love again."

For a couple weeks I've been listening to music by a dead loved on repeat and missing them so much I can barely function. The idea of someone conjuring some AI mimicry of them is one of the most revolting things I can think of and anyone who would even consider doing this is completely depraved

To every person who doesn’t see the big picture regarding AI, this is something you need to see and consider.

Ask yourself: β€œIf AI isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things and is unrelated to the rise of fascism, why are fascists so preoccupied with its proliferation, adoption, and use?”
