It's not that "the Internet" is worse or "enshittified" or whatnot. That's just clinging to the belief that the Internet is special and separate from the "real world".

my big issue with "enshittification" as a term is that it represents what it critiques: a general decline in facility with metaphor, overall literary cleverness, public intellectual culture itself. Compare with a term like Twain's "The Gilded Age"

Now, the above assumes a neurotypical, fully supported student. Let me rephrase: the fifteen credit hour student is premised on an idealized image of who a student is and what they are capable of. It assumes certain social and material resources that make possible the kind of dedication needed.

I'm going to float this nuclear take: maybe students are increasingly turning to ShitGPT and other deskilling devices because the structure of the modern university has made it impossible for them to acquire skill in a deep way.
