Conservation projects abandoned as rich countries retreat from climate fight | The Observer

It's not just ambition on climate action that's being run down, but nature.

Planet Earth is in the fight of its life and, on balance, those of us who are its allies are losing.

It's our duty to work out why, and act on it.

California has installed 17,000 MW of batteries connected to the electricity grid, up from 500 MW in 2020. πŸ”‹πŸ”ŒπŸ’‘

Clean Energy accounted for all electricity growth this year. Gas/Coal were basically a wash and will be for years to come for electricity generation.

We need to ramp up batteries because they are 90% cheaper than distribution grid upgrades which is the main reason we have rate increases.

Chart: Carbon emissions are on a better β€” but not good β€” trajectory Ten years after the Paris Agreement, the worst-case warming scenarios seem unlikely. But there’s still a lot of decarbonization left to do.

The world is far from on track to meet Paris Agreement climate goals. But things aren’t as bad as they could be, thanks to the remarkable rise of renewable energy.

Dark forces are preventing us fighting the climate crisis – by taking knowledge hostage | George Monbiot The fundamental problem is this: that most of the means of communication are owned or influenced by the very rich, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Climate breakdown is driven by a storm of lies. This lying is systemic, funded and coordinated, and operates across almost all media, old and new.
This week's column argues that we cannot fight the climate crisis without also fighting the epistemic crisis.

Help stop the Planning and Infrastructure Bill tearing up nature protections I've just emailed my MP and asked them to vote to protect nature in the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. Will you take action too?

Voters want both: homes built and wildlife protected.

MPs should listen to the public, not a false "nature vs growth" narrative.

If nature loses at this stage, it will be because they chose not to protect it.

Tell your MP to back nature: action.rspb.org.uk/page/180990/... πŸ“’

Cop28 is a farce rigged to fail, but there are other ways we can try to save the planet | George Monbiot Inaction and self-interest are built into climate summits. Instead, we need a voting system that can’t be subverted by fossil fuel producers, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Two years ago, I wrote this about how the COP climate summits are designed to fail, and how they could be designed to succeed. Sadly, nothing has changed.

Experts reveal climate change drove extreme wildfire seasons across the Americas, making burned areas much larger Human-driven climate change made wildfires in parts of South America and Southern California many times larger and more destructive, according to an annual assessment by international experts.

Wildfires aren’t necessarily happening more often, but they are becoming more intense.
A new international study shows that hotter, drier conditions are making it easier for fires to spread rapidly once they begin.

β€˜There is no money’: As carbon markets collapse, what happens to the forests they promised to protect? β€” Guardian US After it was found most offsets did not represent real carbon reductions, the money dried up. But successful schemes such as Kasigau in Kenya now face a stark future

The company making money from the carbon offset market was wildly overstating its effectiveness. Investors found out and stopped investing. But many of the projects were in fact making a difference and reducing deforestation, and those are now at risk of dying.
