In my mid-teens I thawed and ate a pound bag of gray shrimp, convinced the problem was the lack of cocktail sauce, and not the fact they hadn't been cooked. My parents were nonplussed.

I first learned this one, of all places, in the Air Force communications guide, which I read in some detail for research, not as an enlisted person, but when teaching comp as a grad student.

The other show I immediately think of is NYPD Blue, which, now that I look, premiered a full six years earlier, in 1993. There was definitely a moment for the hand-held style, but you're totally right that its influence on today's TV and film is legion.

Do you remember how many people claimed to feel ill because of the hand-held cinematography? That was a pretty common response, too, and it almost feels quaint now.

Fair but still hilarious I think is where I came out.

No! No bad choice. I once tried to comfort a friend going through a breakup with a screening of Leaving Las Vegas, so at least you know it can't possibly be as wrongheaded as that.

Which reminds me: I've personally heard multiple Germans bring up how shocked they were, after an initial childhood misunderstanding, to learn that this logo does not represent a company whose symbolic core is headwear. The word "hat" is in the name! Under a depiction of a red hat!
