Again, this was in the early 2000s. The idea that this walking inanity could one day become POTUS would have been laughable, like a headline from The Onion. What interests me is that this would have been just as true of Republicans as Democrats, maybe more so. But here we are.

Every time we went, my father-in-law would talk about what a cheater Trump was and how literally everybody knew it. To him, Trump was a reliable joke.

He had run into Trump on several occasions and found him to be "a liar and an idiot." Trump had a well known and well earned reputation for cheating and bloviating.

It breaks my heart that this is what we’ve come to as a Senate — and as a country.
A more honest take than 'no policymaker cares if your paper is published in Nature' is 'most policymakers probably care on some level, but won't understand your paper whether it's in Nature or not'.
This causes a lot of tension, shame and waste. Our challenge is how do we best assist policymakers?
