Nice, took a while for me to recognize, because the galaxies I am used to seeing red are white or blue in this image and it's tilted a bit with respect to the iconic HUDF.

1938 โ€“ The Adventures of Robinย Hood 1938 - The Adventures of Robin Hood An American swashbuckling epic directed by Michael Curtiz and Willian Keighley. It stars Errol Flynn in the titular Robin Hood role and Olivia de Havilland as Maid Marian. It's the first Technicolor picture on my movie list. This, plus the extensive settings, fight scenes, costumes, etc. made for a budget well over $2 million; it was Warner Brother's most expensive picture made at that time, but made it back comfortably as one of the highest grossing movies of that year.

Number 14 of my 100 movies from 1925-2024.

Specific experiment based instruments are great, but these threads are a reminder that general purpose instruments are so important! Scientists will get so creative in the ways to use these.

ESO time allocation coming in this morning - pretty ok with the results (feedback was totally adequate).
UT4's (MUSE / ERIS) oversubscription has gone down from ~10:1 to "only" 8.3:1. I guess, now JWST is truly the most oversubscribed telescope (~9:1).

First Images from NSFโ€“DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory | #RubinFirstLook YouTube video by National Science Foundation News

At Winter AAS 2003 (first ever), my advisor told me:
"You need to attend Tony's presentation, he might come to Davis."
"Why do I need to care?", "Because of LSST!", "What's LSST?
"Tanya, just go, it will be awesome!"
Yes, Bob, you were right, it is freaking awesome!

This image combines 678 separate images taken by NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory in just over seven hours of observing time. Combining many images in this way clearly reveals otherwise faint or invisible details, such as the clouds of gas and dust that comprise the Trifid nebula (top right) and the Lagoon nebula, which are several thousand light-years away from Earth.

The Rubin Observatory will make the most detailed time-lapse images of the universe ever. It will map dark matter & and dark energy, and spot billions of transient cosmic events.

Incidentally, it will also take breathtaking images. First looks, out now: ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ”ญ

Just spent an amazing three weeks in Aspen debating Lya emitters, among others with these 3 wonderful ladies from Iran, Japan and France. We thrive when we come together. I was so sad to see Hasti being worried the whole time about her parents in Tehran. We forget so much about the human side.
