The Starmer government is doing everything in its power to lead us toward a Reform government. It is rudderless, always on the back foot, bad policy reactions, policies do not attempt to solve any of the structural issues we have been facing. There is an enormous shortage of capable leadership.

Trump appears to have had a health crisis. Will he die before America fully converts into an authoritarian regime. They clearly need him to complete it. Obviously, he also has to look strong while doing it. So a speech debilitating stroke could be a significant hurdle, too.

People should not expect any major pushback from the markets, definitely not in the short term. It's not rational to think that the markets will react to the expectation of the long term deterioration of economic conditions. Those will be heavily discounted into the present.

The 10-yr yield is now flat/down. There will not be a dislocation in the treasury market because of this. At least until there is a Supreme Court decision and even then if there is a spike in yields, it will be temporary.

Oh yes, and businesses (also many individuals) will not complain out of fear of being targeted. You want to stay low and seem irrelevant, maybe they’ll forget about you. Existence under authoritarian rule is very different. You’ll lear and het used to it.

Finally, the costs of building out a fascist state and deconstructing the very institutions that had created wealth and prosperity for Americans (even if lately, inequality has surged and is undermining democracy) will manifest over the long term. Long term costs are discounted just like revenues.

Bad government data is really bad for economic decision and policy makers and it is socially suboptimal (immoral) but then again the Trump administration is not optimising on what is socially desirable and maximise wealth for the largest number of America’s citizens.

Hedge funds by the way love bad data, it gives them edge. My most successful trade this month has been because of a badly written article that contained inaccuracies. Hedge fund find other proxies to decipher what really is going on. So any hedge fund would welcome back government data.

In terms of the equity markets. The equity market returns have been driven over the past years, really a decade, by a handful of companies that innovated but also monopolised the digital economy, recently helped by the AI craze (genAI is not around the corner but it doesn’t matter, for now)

For a country like the United States, bond yields will not act like in a country such as the UK. Yields spike substantially when there is a structural dislocation in the Treasury markets.
