Hmm, this is the opposite but I respect a game that does not have a comeback mechanic built in.

‘Favourite’ is tricky, but I’m quite partial to hand management a la Race for the Galaxy and Concordia

Maybe not so much a mechanism, but I love it when games allow for simultaneous play. “Everyone! Do your galfank phase!”

Tableau building.

It tends to go hand-in-hand with engine building, my favorite genre, and lets you admire the game's art.

In isolation probably auctions?

They're almost inherently interactive and also allow different tables to import or create their own dynamics.

Also they tend to self-regulate so they are often a tidy way to "balance" an economy

Even when it's not spelled out in the rulebook, I always let players galfank simultaneously

Deckbuilding, esp. the Ascension type with a changing market.

🎲 Rolling dice to hit a target number.

Not sure if that's considered a mechanism but it's an element in almost any game I call a "fave".

A dichotomy:

1). Our level of convenience these days is taken for granted.

2). The adventurous spirit required to go out on a cold winter's evening and search through hundreds of titles until you find a movie to take home and pop into the VHS player is taken for granted.

Favourite board game mechanism?

Thinking about how dislocated we all are from our entertainment these days, there was always something so human about choosing a vhs tape and clunking it into the player, same with cassettes and even CDs.

Now it’s all glass screens. Guess that’s why board games mean so much to me.

Trick Taker Concept 💡:

Medieval court theme with four noble suits and standard ranks.

Twist: Each player draws three secret high-value Assassin cards from a separate deck and may play one face-down per round. Victory points come from distinct card values, not trick rank.
