The ending of The Rose Field at first took me by surprise. But it is only growing on me more and more with every passing day. Just like The Amber Spyglass I just cannot shake thinking about it. Thought provoking and oh so bittersweet.

Can't wait to reread The Book of Dust down the line

It is the best thing he has ever written. A non-escapist fantasy that packs a punch like no other. I was close to feverish going through the last four chapters. Magnificent and monumental.

Finished The Rose Field last night.

That was a gorgeous but devastating read. There are some things even Queen Tatiana can't help.

Like The Amber Spyglass, I will be thinking about this and it will be embedded in my soul till the end of my days.

The alethiometer has four needles in total: the three ones that can be moved to point to different symbols and a long thin out that moves by Dust. So the illustration is correct.

I am finding I cannot just zip through, speed read The Rose Field, no matter how hungry I am reach the conclusion. Instead i am enjoying the journey, indulging in it, getting into a deeply meditative state after every chapter.

what grinds my gears is the fixation on Will. Will this and Will that and the return of Will and will Will come back. And the occasional trashing on Malcolm.

We have a vast metaphorical world to relish in and there is much fixation on that. We do indeed need to find the imagination again.
