This is wild. I've sat on peer review colleges and I would say that maybe 20% of what you see is solid enough you'd happily fund it.
It's such a crushing waste of time - especially when you see it metricised as a vehicle to determine "performance". Even submitting is a herculean task...

It's handy though, and I'll use it in my transport economics lecture to the first years.
Induced demand/reduced demand, and this.

2000 consecutive days of duolingo
What started as something constructive and positive to do for my mental health during the first lockdown has sprawled into 2000 days of duolingo (which ironically has not alwaysbbeen mission achieved).
Am I any better at speaking Polish now?
Nie.

Glad to see some evidence that shared space isn't really the answer either (I've long, long, thought it was usually just a cop out).

A few years ago, during a project meeting, I had one of my most formative experiences as an academic. A table of mid(ish)-career folk agreed we a) didn't like the toxic 'norms' of academia, b) we would do more to both speak up against it and c) act differently.
I try to embody it every way I can.

As the nights draw in, the clocks get ready to go back, and I need to light my bike up like a Christmas tree, I'm (once again) starting to think about the Messi Principle.
Your bike infra might be great on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but can it do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke*?

Pretty much spot on - the parking strategy is more of the stick (which I think IS needed) and public transport is the carrot.
Oyster-style ticketing, circular routes, better movement across/around the city centre is all still needed.

I think the big picture is right here. In recent chats with officers we've often spoken about how Liverpool has a transport network of multiple modes, rather than a true multi-modal network.
The individual parts are (mostly) ok, but could be better. And, crucially, they don't connect well.

I noticed it would take longer and longer to switch off, especially if I was going South out of the city. Probably one of the few things I missed about life in a smaller town.
I also really missed riding with my friends during covid. There's something about not looking at someone so you can talk.

Fair play to you for calling it out too. I get it *a bit* and it can be a proper joy sapper, but it must be really hard for public figures (that from last night stuck in my mind but you see it all over).

I generally like the Everton ground (though I think it's boring), but they completely tapped out of doing any decent public realm works/planning gain outside of the physical site. The city will pay the costs of that for decades.

A very rare full morning out which I have taken complete advantage of. Currently sat 35 miles and 2hrs into what will be the longest ride since my youngest was born.
I reckon my commuter bike plays a huge part in keeping me sane, but it's hard to describe the deeper place you go on longer rides.

I could go on about the 1001 ways colleagues chip away at it. It's not just old school toxic male culture either - some of the worst offenders have been women: "you don't go to enough conferences", in person meeting at 9am on campus etc.
