Hey! I did a thing where I talked about teaching law for OJEN’s Law Syrup podcast 🙂

It’s a privilege to have the mental capacity/leisure time to follow & care about a sport. It’s nice to have some collective experiences, shared with millions of people.

But I feel bad for these guys on the team - some of them kids, really - this will follow them around forever.

The volunteer judges were so generous with their time and feedback, our lawyer coaches were awesome, and it was just a great way to put an exclamation mark on a year of learning about the law.

Can’t believe it’s already been 8 years of doing these!

In our case, we had a brand new group try this for the first time, and even one student has had been on the periphery of every team, watching, since grade 9 and finally taking the plunge in their final year!

A huge thank you to the amazing work of Amelia and @ojenroej.bsky.social for a wonderful mock trial experience last night. Another cohort of kids were captivated by the legal advocacy experience.

Summer Law Institute (SLI) - OJEN OJEN’s Summer Law Institute is our flagship professional development event. This two-day conference has been held in the historic Osgoode Hall.

OJEN’s Summer Law Institute takes place on Tuesday, August 26 & Wednesday, August 27 at Osgoode Hall, Toronto. This professional development conference brings teachers together with legal professionals & academics to explore emerging issues in law.

I haven’t seen this anywhere yet, but it felt necessary to do.

A huge thank you as always to OJEN for running the Charter Challenge. It is such a special competition and experience.

Great day; great kids. Just a wonderful way to end the semester. Absolutely extraordinary work by these kids, the level of which far surpasses the expectations of any grade 11 Canadian law class. I am running out of superlatives to describe Bloor students year after year!

Each graduating group of law society members since then has grown more and more, and a result, this has become much more costly to continue! It doesn't necessarily feel like something I can have the school purchase, given it is a gift.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Do you have any ideas of where to acquire affordable legal tabs on a yearly basis? I started giving out framed legal tabs as a graduation gift for Bloor Law Society students a few years ago (see attached photo.)

Thrilled a Bloor CI team has been selected as one of this year’s finalists in the @OJEN_ROEJ Charter Challenge! Happy this remarkable group of students & their efforts have been recognized in this way. Looking forward to hearing their arguments at Osgoode Hall in January.

Creating a factum in and of itself is a tremendous accomplishment and I am so floored by the level of work they completed!

The average length of their work was 51 pages! The longest was 95 pages (!) and the shortest was 33. They The groups are made up of grade 9 to 12 students, mainstream and TOPS alike, including many students not currently taking law, or who have never taken it altogether.

This was probably one of the most challenging cases I have ever worked through with students (section 24.1 of the Charter is not the most fun to work with!)

This year, students were asked to examine a case about a trans male inmate seeking a transfer from a women’s prison to a men’s prison, and whether the prison director’s denial of that transfer violated their constitutional rights.

What a privilege to do what I do! We had 21 teams working on this case and a record (for our school!) EIGHT teams submitted a factum to the OJEN Charter Challenge competition.
