No they have not. I went a couple years ago and at the time I wasn’t even aware of the gravity of Katrina the way I am now and I could clearly see the devastation is still there

And see I knew this and was still not expecting them to stoop that low

And I’m definitely gonna get to that but I can’t lie I need a lil hiatus from reading about and see my people continuously be sabotaged by the us government😭 and not that I won’t see that when I research other countries but I’m not gonna pretend like it’s not very personal when it’s my own

They specifically replayed that clip about 3 times and you can tell Spike is trying to really just present the facts of the time objectively but it was like in that moment he couldn’t just place that clip and not emphasize how fucking disrespectful it was for him to say that

He’s been memified and rebranded as this funny dopey nepo baby who just didn’t know what he was doing when that was not the case AT ALL

Huge reason why the attempts to rehabilitate Bush piss me off so much. So much human suffering took place because of him, and the government "response" to Katrina is maybe the most transparently and indefensibly evil of the bunch

American history is horrific. It’s soooo horrific. But it also soooo interesting. Once I’m through with thoroughly researching modern American history, I don’t know what country I’ll dive into next. Would love to hear what countries you’ve learned about that have expanded your world view

Americans voted for Bush 1 and 2. They voted for Regan. They voted for diet republican democrat Clinton. And after all that, Obama wins?? By a landslide??? What was in the air? Genuinely how did that happen?

So like how did Obama win the 2008 election with such an overwhelming majority?

I was only 8 when that happened and also steeped in an “apolitical” cult so I wasn’t allowed to engage in the politics of the time at all lol. So I’m genuinely confused as to how that was even remotely possible

Watching the new docu-series on Hulu will reinforce this fact. There was a collective and intentional lack of responses that was very evidently fueled by racism and classism.

And it’s like everything we speculated when Katrina hit was confirmed by the people who lived it.

After watching the NatGeo doc, it is right up there with Tulsa, Oklahoma for me when it comes to purposefully destroying Black lives.

I think about this a lot. We are the history makers and the culture makers. What stories we tell and pass down and amplify really do determine and play a huge part in what does and doesn’t get remembered. That’s why I watched it with my sister and that’s likely why spike flew out there to film it

We get to choose what we remember, IMO. Collectively, we *can* define what's important for focus. I do think a lot of capture of attention (into the hands of "spokespersons") has helped with this to a point of erasure
