Increasing temperatures are already killing huge numbers of people.
A ProPublica and @us.theguardian.com analysis found that Trumpโs โAmerica Firstโ agenda is expected to add substantially to the toll, with the vast majority of deaths occurring outside the U.S.

The 1.3M figure is an underestimate. โIt does not include the massive number of deaths expected from the broader effects of climate change, such as droughts, floods, wars, vector-borne diseases, hurricanes, wildfires and reduced crop yields.โ
Or deaths from additional co-pollutants.
about to go on @kalwradio.bsky.social to talk about this story
www.propublica.org/article/trum...
Yes, it's upsetting. More people will die as a result of the additional GHG gases the US has just decided to emit, BUT the math works the other way, too.
If we cut emissions, that will saves lives

19.11.2025 14:32 โ ๐ 43 ๐ 22 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Important paragraph laying out the time scale and cold benefits:
โAs the planet warms in the next few decades, the global decline in people dying from cold may almost entirely offset deaths from heatโฆ
At first, globally, the numbers more or less balance out, but by 2050ish the heat deaths way outpace the reduction in deaths from cold. So long after Trump's gone, the most deadly effects of his policy changes will be felt around the world
20.11.2025 11:48 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Interesting thing I learned while researching this piece: while rising temperatures will cause more heat deaths, they'll also cause fewer people to die of cold

Modeling by @jessedjenkins.com Repeat Project show even higher emissions amounts under Trump, which in turn produce higher death estimates

Truly chilling, from @jlussenhop.bsky.social & Andy Mannix
Hard to think about these numbers, which are "only" deaths directly from heatโnot from floods, fires wars & the other consequences of climate change (and are, of course, estimates and projections)
But the math works 2 ways: If you add emissions, you cause deaths. If you reduce them, you save lives.
This story stemmed from this question: what will be the human toll of Trump's climate rollbacks?
Turns there is emissions modeling that can help provide an estimate.
Using modeling from @rhg.com we estimated the additional death toll as high as 1.3 million

19.11.2025 16:16 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Worth noting that, while the US has emitted more greenhouse gases than any other country, modeling by @rdbressler.bsky.social shows that the US is expected to experience 1% or less of the global temperature-related deaths
19.11.2025 16:14 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Our estimate: the additional greenhouse gases emitted between now and 2035 could cause up to 1.3 million more deaths worldwide. That's just directly from heat & doesn't include the other broader effects of climate change, such as droughts, floods, wars, vector-borne diseases, hurricanes, wildfires

New: A @propublica.org & @theguardian.com analysis shows that extra greenhouse gases released in the next decade as a result of Trumpโs policies are expected to lead to as many as 1.3M more temperature-related deaths worldwide in the 80 years after 2035.
