Of course, it still results in a rather expensive book. My first book is 168,000 words and the only way to make the pricing kinda ok is to publish it in a rather large (6inx9xin) format. I'd prefer 5x7 but that would make it about 4$ more expensive due to pagecount.

Interesting. I'm going to publish with ingram spark and I have to say the calculation looks different there. It won't make a difference if a paperback is sold through amazon of a bookstore, they both receive the same retailer discount and the author share is the same in both cases.

Not long now, we're on the Final, Final, Final Edit. Should be publishing soon(tm). White alot has changed in the way the story is told.

So, I thought it would be cool if my cover artist (dariajordan.eu) got a character in Alagariel II. Of course, she chose a Desert Dwarf. a species that I only vaguely decided on the existence of. I think the book just got at least thirty pages longer. Serves me right for suggesting it.

Magic is pretty low key on Vatan. I'd say a Customs office would mostly have no clue he was looking at magic or the subject of it. For that, we have The Royal Erythraen Guild of Thaumaturgists which, now that you mention it, probably deserve their own entry at some point.

Haven't gone so far as to start writing passages from legal texts, except maybe proclamations. Can't think of a way that will really add to any of my stories, but that might be because I'm with Dick the Butcher and his 'the first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers' strategy (Shakespeare).

I have some more general background material that I will add pages for, but I need to check them for spoilers. Eventually, I want the 'Companion' section for each setting to be quite comprehensive, good enough to work as an RPG setting.

Add in practical considerations like not having massive barbarian tribes right next to big cities (World of Greyhawk anyone?) and things tend to organise themselves. I think you shouldn't over define until you need something in the story, otherwise you might lore yourself into a corner.
