ANALYSIS: Irish footballโ€™s optimism-pessimism swing THE definition of optimism is โ€˜the quality of being full of hope and emphasising the good parts of a situation, or a belief that something good will happenโ€™. With Irish football, it's easy to be pessimistic about our optimism. An academic study could be conducted into how public opinion on the health of the game in this country has evolved. When we had world class players in the 1980s but could not get over the line with regards to reaching major tournaments, pessimism was the default view of the national team.

Ireland's national football team provokes optimism and pessimism in equal measure. Heimir Hallgrimsson now knows the reality of the task on his hands. I looked beyond the narratives & investigated the data.
