But just as they bent their torches to light the kindling and murder this woman they’d accused of witchcraft—her latent power ignited instead.

I have a big issue with people treating fanfiction like it's something shameful. That calling a book a 'fanfic' is a dirty word. When fanfiction, in and of itself, is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, and in my opinion, is a legitimate sub-genre of literature.
