Okay, The problem stems from centralisation and lack of regional control. I get the nimbyism, sometimes you need to build on appropriate green land but perhaps keep part of the land open space for
People and nature. Don't think you would agree to develope the Stray In Harrogate for instance.
The problem is that there is no real joined up planning. There are opportunities to develope brownfield sites and at the same time try and preserve some green spaces for local people to enjoy as they have in London. We do recognise the need to build, but we want it done with consideration
23.07.2025 18:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Did you read the article? This is not what we are saying. We need proper planning controls to achieve the housing target for the entire Sheffield region. Not all sites are suitable.

"Fixing it does not just mean tinkering around with Whitehall structures but reducing the decisions that the centre of govenment needs to be involved in. Which means undoing the trend of the past forty years . The destruction of local government"
Another report that calls for bigger & better devolution. This is too big a job for an individual Mayor. This type of devolution needs a regional government, as seen in most successful economies throughout the world. Britain is far too centralised.

There is a lot of work behind the scenes to establish a fairer society where local people look after their own regions. it works in the most successful countries. excluding dictatorships, we in Britain a top or near the top of centralised governance.
11.07.2025 08:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I agree the ridings of Yorkshire differ as does the whole country, but dived we fall. The Basque region in Spain was very similar to us, Industrial decline, Fishing Farming, you name it but look at it now.

Yorkshire People have more in common with other Yorkshire folk than we do with people in Westminster London. It's the only way to get a fair funding deal working together or perhaps you may prefer to stay as we are and see most of the benefits stay in the South
It worth considering anyway.π
@yorkshirebylines.co.uk Excellent article! Strongly agreeβYorkshire deserves real autonomy. Local control will unlock our region's potential, generating far more than invested.

We will live with the shame of this forever. Not straightforward to fix it I get that, but watching people being driven out of their homes, slaughtered and starved is another matter.

Bilbao in Spain is one example, it turned its fortunes around with bold regional governance. Investing in infrastructure, innovation, and partnerships to boost jobs and the economy. The UK should follow this example for growth in our own deprived regions.

Central governments cling to power. Yorkshire's 2018 One Yorkshire proposal offered a prime opportunity for change. A missed opportunity. The mayors, through their newly formed White Rose group, acknowledge this issue and push for reform.
