05.08.2025 18:11 β π 39 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0I'm eternally grateful I decided to take that vacay in Minneapolis last year.
'Cuz it increasingly looks like that may have been my last chance to EVER visit the States without being sent to a gulag.
Haley MacLean won't be attending the MinnMax community meetup this Saturday because US Customs wouldn't let her into the country from Canada because she might appear in a video...
Yes, we're also furious at the US government. Send some love to @haleyfax.bsky.social!
Hailey at MinnMax was already detained by customs trying to fly down to Minneapolis for a meet and greet with their community and refused entry into the country because she didnβt have a work visa and she might appear in a video they make of the meet and greet. All these conventions are going to die

04.08.2025 22:47 β π 25 π 7 π¬ 1 π 0One of the (many) things I love about Bryant is that it was a completely average American street (2 way traffic, 2 side car parking).
Most streets in the U.S. have plenty of space for protected bikeways.
We just need to make safety (for all road users) a priority.
Hereβs Bryant before:
Where is the meeting spot for tonight's ride?

Seen in Montreal: a small apartment building attached to a semi-detached home. Lots of trees, and a bike path.
Density makes neighbourhoods better.
The weekly Strava heatmap is the only evidence needed to completely disregard the Save our Street campaign and build a safe Summit Ave bike way.
29.07.2025 00:54 β π 21 π 3 π¬ 2 π 0When four homes replace a SFH, each new home is about the same price as the original, and at 5 units or more, the new homes tend to be more affordable. But the critical comparison is to the 1-for-1 replacement β a mansionization, in other words.

03.08.2025 19:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is what I really like about a lot of the St Paul and Minneapolis suburbs in general by bike. It feels so nice not being hemmed into certain parts of the area just because I don't want to drive.
03.08.2025 18:01 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I don't like being limited to leaving downtown at midnight so I bike to be able to stay out later but not have to drive home.
It is so nice biking home at that hour.
You can be pro-city without being anti-everything else. Suburbia isn't disappearing, so instead of treating it like a lost cause, start treating it like the fixer-upper it actually is. Healthy suburbs are possible.
03.08.2025 12:30 β π 94 π 9 π¬ 3 π 0For me, the difference is that cedarfest and the @ourstreetsmn.org Imagine series have a purpose behind them beyond just opening up the street and bringing on vendors.
What I would love to see is open streets used as a test run for full pedestrianization for certain streets. Raise the stakes.
Aerial shot of Gaza City, burned and bombed into burned and shattered, unliveable wreckage as far as can be seen.
Whole area that used to be houses, shops, public transport routes, made into rubble and blackened, unliveable ruins. Aerial shot shows vast area entirely obliterated as habitable, attacked again and again by Israeli forces.
Several wrecked Gaza schools, shown from the air, pulverised by Israel's forces: windows all gaping, bombed out and covered in ash and dust. Some people are trying to live in makeshift camps amid the destruction, in former quadrangles and bomb sites.
Aerial shots of neighbourhoods with destroyed apartment buildings, houses, offices and shops, all bombed by Israel's government. Starving people are trying to live in tents and makeshift cubbies on the former roundabouts on a main road.
This what Israel has done to Gaza. Forbidden pics by a Washington Post photographer whose Jordanian air crew didn't pass on Israel's order to only photograph aid being dropped. City, suburbs, schools, people: bombed to rubble. People being starved in makeshift camps on road roundabouts. #Genocide
03.08.2025 04:31 β π 585 π 425 π¬ 16 π 16The way we design our streets makes it nearly impossible for Americans to see walking as transportation or bikes as anything other than toys for kids or weekend fun.
03.08.2025 00:34 β π 136 π 15 π¬ 9 π 1People say stuff like, βI would live in Minneapolis but itβs too expensiveβ a lot. And, fair. The cost of housing is absurd. We need to build more housing. But often it seems itβs not that itβs too expensive, but rather that the suburbs have cooked their brains with βbigger is always better.β 1/4
03.08.2025 01:21 β π 74 π 7 π¬ 8 π 0As we start a new month, let's look at what happens in August.
Losing over an hour of daylight sticks out like a sore thumb.
Iβve noticed a cultural change toward everyone bringing their own information with them, and it being tech-dependent
You used to have paper tickets. Now you need a QR code on your phone.
There used to be subway maps everywhere. Now you need an app.
There used to be public clocks.
Why are bike lanes being fought so hard right now? Powerful people are trying to take away an option for people to fight the climate crisis. To keep us in cars to concentrate wealth through the expense of car ownership. This more than bike lanes this is democracy we are fighting for.
02.08.2025 11:28 β π 124 π 28 π¬ 9 π 3I mean, how else do we cultivate in students (& ourselves) the habits of asking questions & evaluating answersβ even of and from themselvesβ critical distance, & a wariness of confirmation bias, before they're confronted with a "AI" tools designed to make people like & accept whatever they tell us?

02.08.2025 05:25 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The massive list of suspended UCLA grants came out today: 300 NSF and 500 NIH grants. I am miraculously not on the list, but this is devastating. Science will be lost, progress will be frozen, people will lose jobs, and careers in science and medicine are being destroyed. This is not ok.
