Having my first mammogram since breast cancer came knocking at our door tomorrow. On Friday I’ll be seeing the surgeon who carried out my mastectomy to discuss some niggling things related to meds etc etc. Have been informed I may get the results of scan, too. Would appreciate any positive vibes. πŸ™

@adamcsharp.bsky.social shares fascinating facts about the meaning behind different phrases. How well known UK expressions and colloquialisms have their own equivalent in other counties.

Have a poorly boy here, who cannot understand why I won’t feed him. Having a big sulk about it. Once his stomach settles down both ends I’ll try him with something. Meanwhile, I’m being a mean human. Poor lad! Joys of being a feline’s mum. πŸ˜”

The ONS report from December 2024 states that generally criminality has DECREASED over the past decade. But don’t let facts get in the way of whipping up fear and hatred, eh?

I’ve just signed up to mentor again, do consider it if you’ll have a little time to share your experience of working in the arts/creative industries.

The best ideas come from working with other people. From networks.

Heartily agree with you. Whilst my late mum was of an age where you would expect her to die; we were extremely close BTW, I had folk constantly telling me not to cry. One day I’d had it and told them straight: β€œI need to cry. This needs to come out. This is the price of love.”

❀️ I’m fine. Merely ruminating on one of many taboo subject society doesn’t want to discuss, though I have personal experience of early losses, as so many people do.

Buttered malt loaf 😍 Haven’t had any in ages. Even better on a rainy day. Rained here this morning. Been warm and sunny the past few hours.

In UK culture we’ve become a bit more open about discussing our grief, yet to a great extent it remains a taboo subject. Particularly when it concerns losing someone young or unexpectedly. Grief is a complex shape-shifting animal that comes in many guises.

We don’t talk enough about what it’s like to lose someone dear to you well before their time. The impact it has on those left behind. Losing someone you love at any time in your life is very tough indeed, yet we’re more accustomed socially to it. It’s sadly expected.

We’ve likely come across someone who reminds us of a particular character or we’re aware of those traits within ourselves.

That goes for all aspects of historical stories, not just the sexual side of it. Also, some ancient societies were pretty raunchy and very violent.

β€œβ€¦ so much historical drama is about *now.*

Great point from Greg here. We’re seeing ourselves, social mores and constructs through a mirror of the past. Also, human instincts hasn’t changed through history. It’s why we can relate to the characters in historical dramas and plays etc.

03.08.2025 08:32 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

When we make stories about the past, we often ask questions about ourselves β€” sure, stories are also inflected through the rigid tropes of genre, the desire for romance, the thrill of unfamiliar violence, the material alienness of costume and castles. But so much historical drama is about *now*

As a historian who has worked in TV historical drama, I can answer The Guardian’s question by telling you that the dramatised past is invariably a mirror to our contemporary mores. If the raunch is steadily increasing, it’s because of our expectations

Will also add: can be valuable to tell a writer what does work as well as what doesn’t. Some writers may be oblivious to what they’re good at as opposed to where they need to improve.

Constructive negative feedback is essential. Better to explain why something didn’t resonate for you, rather than merely saying you didn’t like it. Make suggestions or pose questions the screenwriter/writer can think about and explore in order to make it work better.

Writers not only write for themselves but for their wider readership or audience. Nice for them to know how something they’ve created has affected people who’ve read or seen something that once only lived in the writer’s imagination.

Some of the best writers are very self-effacing and incredibly down to earth. They’re all too familiar with having their work critiqued, positively and negatively, by so-called professional critics. In my experience some may not give much away or slightly bat off your comments, but they DO like them

Given how artists and writers alike tend to be their own worst critics…

Used to be nervous around telling a writer whose work I admired that it touched me in some way fearing they may think I’m not being genuine or β€œjust saying that.” Turns out they like to be told.

Please also do this for novelists, poets, playwrights and screenwriters. They do like to hear that their work is appreciated. Generally writers work alone so getting positive feedback from the outside world can be valuable and validating.
