Republican consultant Dustin Grage posted what has long been an open secret: “Every Republican in Minneapolis is going to be voting for Jacob Frey.”

MINNEAPOLIS (July 21, 2025) — On Saturday, delegates to the Minneapolis DFL City Convention gathered at the Target Center to endorse candidates for key municipal offices, including Mayor, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, and Board of Estimate & Taxation. After a full day of debate, organizing, and floor speeches, the convention produced official endorsements in several races ahead of the November city election. For the first time in 80 years, Minneapolis DFL has endorsed a challenger to an incumbent mayor. A super-majority of Minneapolis DFL delegates and the thousands of DFL neighbors they represent are united to elect Sen. Omar Fateh to lead our city in a new direction. Minneapolis DFL was pleased to welcome visiting party dignitaries, including Minnesota DFL State Chair Richard Carlbom who opened the convention with a unifying message: “We are a coalition by definition, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Our party is made up of farmers and laborers. Our party is made up of progressives, environmentalists, feminists, democratic socialists, gays, lesbians, bisexual, and transgender people. We come from different places, we come from different spaces. We represent what is best about America. Our differences are our strength. If you want to be an authoritarian party, go be a Republican.”

Minneapolis DFL Chair John Maraist expressed his thanks to the many party volunteers who made the day possible. “These volunteers spent countless hours preparing for today — collaborating with campaigns throughout the development of the convention’s processes, organizing the delegate rolls from caucus night, and working with Target Center staff to prepare the space.” Maraist was particularly proud of the contrast between the terror of last month’s shooting and the energy of the convention. “We stand up to political violence, and we work out a way forward together.” Maraist also expressed thanks to the donors who made Kosher and Halal meals, normally expensive because they are sourced from outside vendors with certified kitchens, available on an affordable sliding scale. “I am incredibly honored to be the DFL endorsed candidate for Minneapolis Mayor,” said Minneapolis DFL-endorsed candidate for mayor Sen. Omar Fateh. “This endorsement is a clear message that Minneapolis residents are done with broken promises, vetoes, and politics as usual. It’s a mandate to build a city that works for all of us.” “I want to thank the delegates, alternates, party volunteers and my campaign team that worked hard to make this convention and victory possible,” Fateh added. “I also want to thank Rev. More than 700 elected delegates participated in the convention, along with hundreds of alternates, party leaders, and elected officials. Candidates had to meet the party’s 60% threshold of delegate support to receive the endorsement. After engaging with over 8,000 Minneapolis DFLers across 134 precinct caucus meetings, 13 Ward Conventions, and the City Convention, the 2025 Minneapolis DFL endorsement process has concluded. In addition to endorsing candidates, the City Convention also overwhelmingly adopted two platform resolutions: Support for a municipal policy of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) of entities complicit in the occupation and genocide in Gaza. Support for policies to protect natural habitats, including the Great Blue Heron rookery, on the Mississippi River near the Upper Harbor Terminal amphitheater development. These resolutions are official positions of Minneapolis DFL, and they will be forwarded to our endorsed candidates with the expectation that they support our official city platform. Delegates and alternates were dedicated to completing their business on time, with 478 ballots submitted for the day’s final endorsement ballot for Park Board At-Large endorsement contest - a clear quorum. 4. Park commissioners like Cathy Abene probably wish they could file a complaint against Jacob Frey for being a baby of a man who evacuated nearly all of her delegates from the arena because the most important thing to him was creating a cloud of controversy about his own loss.

3. That electronic balloting delayed voting for so long was a harm to Fateh as much as other campaigns. As the clear delegate leader, his campaign wanted to speed to more rounds of voting, not less.

2. The electronic voting problems were real. But, when those problems were raised, the convention voted on whether to redo the first ballot. Delegates decided to move on to a second ballot.

On the challenges to Omar Fateh's DFL endorsement for mayor:

1. The quorum complaints seem unfounded, based on photo evidence and the paper ballot for park board at large.

It’s ok to critique Mpls DFL tech probs (tho med emergency involved) & doing all biz on 1 day (objective $ reasons), but if you don’t acknowledge Team Frey delay tactics to stifle majority’s clear will then criticize majority for finding a legal way through, I pronounce yours a DISINGENUOUS TAKE.

Frey campaign put "Team Mpls" on the t-shirts because the phrase "Team Me, Myself, & Definitely Not My Friends Running for Park Board — Feel Free to Walk Right Out On Those Suckers" wouldn't fit on a shirt.
