This smacks of the sort of tactics employed by MAGA and Trump to identify those applying proper legal practices to do something the right disagree with for the purposes of intimidation. This is the very opposite of normal democratic political behaviour.

There’s a real tension between those that believe in the Old Testament God who very much believes in punishment and suffering and the New Testament God who believes in healing and helping their fellow man. The Republicans tend to favor the former and the Democrats the latter.
